07-29-2005 Flea Market, Indo China and Lake Hunting

Friday, July 29, I was up early and updated the last three days of journal pages. There are bright blue skies this morning after the rain last night. It's a chilly 54 degrees but warming quickly. Tome next door is on his roof early this morning washing his rig. I wish he'd do ours:-)

After breakfast I did some paperwork. Bob handled some outside chores. We took the propane bottle down to the office and got it filled. I took the laptop too and got mail and looked up a Shipwreck Museum and two golf courses. While we were sitting at the picnic table using the wireless a squirrel ran by three times carrying tiny pink hairless babies about the size of a golf ball in its mouth. We guessed she was moving her babies to a different nest site. Something must have spooked her. I've never seen newborn squirrels before.

We dropped the propane tank and laptop off at home, then we drove up to exit 322 to a flea market Bob saw in the brochures. It was not huge like we thought; just one building. But I found some golf bargains; a glove, a visor and a head cover for my naked Divine Nine. Next we kept going east to Cheboygan and stopped at the downtown post office to mail a package. Then we had lunch at Indo China Gardens--our new hangout. We got a different table on the other side this time. The lunch crowd is over by 2:30. We tried the Crab Wontons with orange sauce for an appetizer. Very good AND filling. Then I had mixed veges with shrimp and Bob had chicken vege stir fry.

We darted right across Hwy 23 to Lafayette Road and took it down Black River Road to check out a golf course. But it was a 9-hole dog track. So we continued on over to Hwy 33 and dipped south to find Onaway Road and the two small lakes we saw down there. We found Cochran Lake first. It had a nice DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) access. Then we took a long sandy road to Roberts Lake. It's a bit more of a challenge to launch the boat. But the cover looks a little better for fishing and the lake is a bit larger. We'll check one of them out next week.

Onaway Road took us over to Old Straits Hwy in downtown India River. We bought a paper from a machine in front of Christopher's cafe and headed home. We sat out and chatted with Tom who was BBQing some chicken. He took a break to eat and we did some chores. I put away my new golf equipment and rearranged my bag. Bob remounted and marked the trolling motor to make it easier out on the lake. Plus he MacGuivered an extension handle until we find one that articulates. He also gassed up the motor so we are ready for our next fishing excursion. I had a voice message from my niece, Megan, tonight. She got the package I sent. Unfortunately we're in dead cell phone land. Maybe I can walk down the road tomorrow and get her.

It's 6:55 and 71.5 degrees.
