07-24-2005 The Boathouse, The Laundry Mat and The Cell Phone!

Sunday, July 24, rain, thunder and lightening woke us up at around 4:00 a.m. It rained until 8:30 and the sun peeked through around 11:00. But it clouded over again and got really muggy. We packed up three loads of laundry and drove to Cheboygan for lunch. To our dismay the Indo Chinese Garden is closed on Sunday. All of the downtown cafes were closed too. We ate at The Boathouse on the Cheboygan River. Built over the Cheboygan River around 1940, this is still a functional and working "Boathouse." Originally built by a somewhat mysterious character who was rumored to be a member of the Original Purple Gang. He supposedly ran everything from whiskey to whatever he could to and from Canada. The Boathouse had to be moved to the parking lot and steel piles were driven to a depth of 50 feet to support the structure. The building was moved back and restored to its present condition. Average water depth under the Boathouse is about six feet deep.

I had Blue Crab Quesadillas and Bob had a Salmon Salad. It was a nice place with a great view of the Inland Waterways. Bob thought the salad was a little bland but I enjoyed by quesadillas. We watched a guy fishing from the embankment but never saw him catch anything. A big baseball game was going on across the river. The table next to us said something about the local firefighters participating.

After lunch we went to the laundry mat next to Wal-Mart and watched a PGA golf tournament on the TV while our clothes were spinning. We stopped next door at Glenn's Grocery to restock our frig. Back home we read the paper. We had to turn on the A/C it was so muggy by this time. Around 9:00 p.m. I walked a mile down Ranch Road until I got a cell phone signal. I enjoyed chatting with several friends and family members until my battery gave out for good.

It's 10:50 p.m. and 73.6 degrees.
