07-11-2005 Golf at Pinecroft, Benzonia, MI

Monday, July 11, it sure took us a while to get going this morning. The sky is kind of overcast for the first time since we got here-I think it's the remnants of Hurricane Dennis. Anyway it sure seems dark in the trailer this morning so we lounged around forever. A guy and his son in a really old pickup truck backed up the 'honey wagon' to our neighbors' trailer. For $5.00 you can get your holding tanks pumped out. Several RV parks have had notices for this service but this is the first time I've seen anyone use it. I guess this place is full and quite a few folks like us are here in a water and electric only site.

We finally got our bones in gear around 3:00 and headed to the golf course. There's really no hurry here since it stays light until 10:30. We stopped at the Benzonia Library first and tried to use the wireless from the parking lot. We couldn't get a signal and we didn't want to face the crazed librarian so we blew it off and headed to the golf course. Pinecroft is a companion course to Champion Hills that we played last week. They were both on land that was a family farm. When farming became too difficult to make money at, they turned the land into golf courses in order to keep the land in the family. They are both very nice courses.

We were able to get on right away behind three young boys who were in the pro shop just ahead of us. We putted for a bit and then teed off. We braved it today and decided to walk since it is overcast. There a magnificent view of Crystal Lake up on this hill. This is the first day it is not deep aqua. It's more of a steel gray which is kind of what I had expected until we got here. I played the Red Tees at a short 4,975 yards with a 118 slope. Bob played the Blue Tees, all the way back, at 6,447 yards and a 124 slope. The fairways here are extremely narrow. I never hit one on the entire front nine and my score reflected it. The secondary rough was deep and thick. My arms are aching from trying to hit out of it. I played better on the back but neither one of us ever figured out the greens. And that's unusual for Bob. He usually gets a handle on them by the end of the round.

We were on hole 12 or 13 and I was thinking it was about 2:30 or so based on the sun in the sky. Silly me, we didn't start until 3:45. It was actually 6:00 p.m. and I couldn't believe it. It was very humid today and reached a high of 93. We just can't seem to get far enough north. We were both glad to finish and we headed in to Benzonia and found The Roadhouse Mexican Grille. What a shock, they don't have air-conditioning! Today is probably one of the few days they need it up here. Bob had low-carb fajitas (no tortillas) and I had the Sombrero Salad with Mango Citrus dressing and grilled chicken. I also tried Wild Bill's Draft Root Beer-very tasty. As naturalized Texans we thought all of the Mexican fare was a bit bland. I'm sure we've developed a taste for hotter things than they serve up north. We also thought it was a bit pricey.

We stopped for gas on the way home and I got a few Cokes for our trip tomorrow. We need to find a Wal-Mart and shop. There are not very many Wal-Marts in Michigan and none of them are Supercenter with grocery stores. We suspect it is because of the unions. Tomorrow we move to Indian River RV Resort in the very northern tip of Lower Michigan. We'll be glad to leave here. This has not been the most aesthetic camp site and our tenting neighbors are noisy and seem to emit a lot of smoke from their campfire into our bedroom window.

It's 11:06 p.m. and 71.3 degrees.
