07-03-2005 Batman Begins, Paisano's and Golf at Sauganash

Sunday, July 3, after breakfast Bob got his new golf cart out of the box, hooked it up to his bag, and took the old one out of the truck. We'll salvage breakable parts to keep mine on the road. About 11:30 we took the backloads through Marcellus to Three Rivers Cine 6. We got there about 20 minutes early so we went to the Shell Station across the road and got a Sunday paper and used the ATM. We parked in the shade at the cinema and waited a few more minutes. The shade was nice but when we tried to roll the window up and go inside, a branch kept blowing in so we couldn't get the window up. At last Bob persevered and we headed inside and bought two tickets for $6.00 each for the 12:40 matinee of Batman Begins.

There were only 8 or 10 people in the theatre. We both enjoyed Batman Begins and voted it the best one with the possible exception of the first with Michael Keaton. Michael Caine was outstanding as he usually is. The special effects were great. I'd see it again and I don't say that about many movies. Afterwards we drove to downtown Three Rivers where we had seen Paisano's Italian Bar & Grille the other day when we were at Lowry's Bookstore. We found parking the back where a bunch of restored '70s and '80s vehicles were lined up. Some kind of auto show was going on. Paisano's had a "Welcome Bikers" message on their marquee. We went up the back steps and entered through the rear door.

Bob got a Patty Melt on great looking marbled rye but it came out a little too pink in the center. I had an 8" personal pizza--the Sunday lunch special for $5.00; Hawaiian BBQ Chicken. We left and continued on through town on M-86 to Lutz Road south where we found Sauganash Golf Club, established in 1924, designed by A.W. Tillinghast. We arrived at 4:10 and almost no one was there in spite of the holiday; or maybe because of it. It was pretty hot on the front nine with a high of 86 but it cooled off on the back. Bob played the Blue Tees at 6,413 yards and a slope of 128 (119/136). I played the Red Tees at 4,802 yards and a slope of 116 (119/117). On the card they had rated the front and back nines separately. I had never seen that before and I'm not sure why. The two nines were very different. It seemed like an older front nine and a newer back nine. The back was much longer for Bob but about the same for me.

I parred the first hole but quickly remembered all of my bad habits by shanking a tee shot into the pond on the Par-3 second hole and suffering a seven. Yikes! After that I settled down and played okay. The greens bad a boulder buried in the center of each one and the pins were atop the boulder on every hole. If that's Tillinghast's trademark, he is not my friend! We were done by 8:15. There's plenty of daylight; we could get another nine in before dark! But the black flies and mosquitoes have other plans.

The 4th of July mob surrounds The Beauty Weekend Warriors are out in force at Leisure Valley Campground in Decatur, MI We get home by 8:45. The mob is still here. I went out with the camera and snapped a few shots of the Gypsy Zoo before they all leave tomorrow. You can see The Beast, the third truck in the row, and The Beauty peaking up behind it in the photo on the left. The picture on the right is looking down the lane standing by our trailer. Unfortunately I never took any before shots. (I thought I could get a shot of our campground when it returned to an empty state on the day after the holiday. But almost no one left by the time we did on Tuesday.) So you'll just have to picture this place with just our trailer and all of the trees because that's how it was for the first ten days we were there.

A cool shower felt great. Now I'm crashed on the bed handwriting my journal tonight. I'm too tired to sit at the computer. It's 10:43 p.m. and 69 degrees.
