06-29-2005 Golf at Pine View in Three Rivers, MI

Wednesday, June 29, I made up for my restless night on Monday and slept in like a bum today. Oh well, it's one of the nice things about retirement. We got out the DeLorme and located two golf courses over near Three Rivers, just southeast of here. Then we donned our golf apparel and took the back roads to Pine View Golf Club. The club was established thirty years ago. There are two 18-hole courses; Spruce and Hemlock, we played the former. Bob played from the White Tees at 6,402 yds with a slope of 119, and I played from the Red Tees at 5,392 yds with a slope of 117.

I was hitting the ball well but my chipping and putting looked like Daffy Duck. It was hot so I had an excuse; 94 degrees and humid. According to the paper the forecast was HHH, hot, humid and hazy! But there was a breeze today and if you were in the shade (possible with all of the nice trees on the course) you could actually cool down. We got brave and walked today. The greens were in perfect condition. As we stepped off of the 9th green, Bob's pull cart splayed out like a giraffe picking up a penny with its teeth! An aluminum weld gave out that was holding the legs up. Fortunately we were only steps from The Beast and he carried the whole thing over there. I think we were both grateful for an excuse to get out of that heat.

It was only 2:30 so we continued east to Hwy 131 and south to Three Rivers. We ate at Big King Buffet on enterprise Drive. This was one of those great Chinese mega-buffets. They had a large bamboo basket filled with "Sweet Paste Bums." They were decorated like pale pink peaches. They were actually steamed rolls (or buns, a.k.a. bums) with a plum sauce filling. We 'rolled' out of that place. Then we went downtown to Lowry's Used Bookstore. This was a huge store covering three old downtown storefronts. They had over 100,000 titles. You could get lost meandering through the narrow isles of high-stacked books. The prices were great and the tomes were well organized. We even bought a Chicago Tribune at the check-out. We got out of there for $24.00.

We went in a couple of antique stores on Main Street but nothing exciting. We headed back home, detouring to check out another small lake on the backloads. We were home before 6:00. Wow! Our whole trailer site is surrounded by newbies. The 4th of July is upon us. Our new neighbors on the streetside have a homemade strand of lanterns around their awning. They are a string of covered wagons each about the size of a lunch pail made out of transparent needlepoint plastic. The strand from right to left says "L A R R Y P O L A S H A K H E L E N."

It's 8:50 p.m. and 78.7 degrees.
