06-27-2005 Golf at Heritage Glen in Paw Paw, MI

Monday, June 27, another hot muggy day has a hold of us. The paper reports that it is the 7th hottest June on record up here. Kalamazoo had a high of 96 degrees just missing an all-time high by one degree. I walked to the pond and sat on a bench but it wasn't very pleasant without a breeze blowing. Back home the mosquitoes chased both of us in. I had six bites before I knew what bit me!

After breakfast we took Red Arrow Hwy east to 30th then north to Heritage Glen Golf Course. We hit two bags of balls on the driving range waiting for a clear sot to tee off. It was $58.00 for two green fees with a cart in this heat! We finally teed off on the back nine around 12:50 as they had a scramble on the front nine. The foursome in front of us let us play through after a few holes. I got off to a poor start with errant drives to the right (in golfing circles a.k.a. banana slices) but got back on track after a few holes.

Bob played the White Tees at 6,049 yds and a hefty slope of 131. I played the Red Tees at 4,858 yds and a surprising 123 slope for such a short length. There were lots of carry shots and undulating greens. We were really glad we took a cart. It was hazy with somewhat high, thin clouds but stifling and muggy. The pace slowed on the back (front for us) as we caught up with the afternoon leagues. The kid in front of us said the average age must be 98. I told him I didn't feel too far from that age in this heat.

We were done by 4:15 and we got in the truck and kept going east to Kalamazoo. We never found the super Chinese buffet that my hairdresser was bragging about. So we ate at Ground Round after several family restaurants were closed on Mondays. Bob had Triple Combo Fajitas (beef, chicken and shrimp.) I had Spinach Raspberry Salad (sweet roasted red peppers, Gouda cheese, red grapes, bacon, grilled chicken and raspberry vinaigrette.) We began to feel human after eating.

We searched for two lakes south of I-94 on the way home. We circled one and never found the boat launch. We found the public access on the second lake which was very near our campground on the back roads. We were home by 6:45 and it is still really hot. We read the Kalamazoo Gazette, took showers, and had a snack. We're both completely wilted from the heat.

It's 9:17 p.m. and 77.2 degrees. There's no end in site for this heat until Friday.
