06-24-2005 A New Shoe in Kalamazoo!

Friday, June 24, I awoke late after reading late in to the night. It is hot already this morning. I walked down by the pond with my coffee and was too hot on a park bench in the shade with a T-shirt on. Back home Bob was sitting out in a lawn chair. The mosquitos chased us in quickly. We had a light breakfast after last night's pig-out at La Cantina's. We headed towards Kalamazoo (east on I-94 towards Detroit, according to Phil) and took 31 north to 43 then back west to 9th Street where we found the Wal-Mart and across from that Beulle's Tires. They actually had the replacement tire for our trailer and we waited while they mounted it. Our new shoe for The Beauty set us back about $80.00. I'm just glad they had one in stock.

Next we went across the street to Wal-Mart and got an oil change since we were on a roll. We picked up a few items while waiting but unfortunately it was not a Super Wal-Mart so there was no groceries. We continued west on 43 back to Hwy 40 and went south to Paw Paw. Just a bit down the road we did a bat turn to stop at a roadside produce stand. We got a Florida watermelon, (the Georgia ones were no good according to the young guy in the stand) a cantalope, some tomatoes and a box of Michigan cherries. Cherries are in season here and there are farms everywhere that you can pick them yourself. We saw blueberry bushes all along the highway. They are ready in July. With one wrong turn I found the post office in Paw Paw again. Then we went on a wild goose chase trying to find a Bistro that my hairdresser told me about. It wasn't where she said it was, or at the address listed on our brochure. We surrendered and went to Gallagher's Pub & Eatery on Kalamazoo. The place had huge screen TVs lining the walls and we were sure we'd get to catch some of the US Women's Open. There were 7 or 8 sports channels going but no Women's Open! Wimbledon took precedence, which is usually fine with me but I really wanted to track Anika Sorenstam's progress toward the third leg of the Grand Slam.

We circled back to downtown to find a grocery store. As we went inside I noticed a sign on the door that they didn't take credit/debit cards. We need to find an ATM so we left. I walked across the street to get the Detroit News out of a vending machine in front of what I thought was a pharmacy. Later, back at Liesure Valley, Bob saw that it was really another grocery store so maybe we could have gone in there. Oh well. Today was incredibly hot; high in the mid 90's and muggy. There are quite a few newcomers here in the campground. They're gearing up for the weekend. Everybody's sitting around in shorts and swimsuits. We're inside in the AC like wimps. After reading the paper and taking the tire out of the truck, Bob finally went over to the pond to fish. It's way to hot for that.

It's 8:15 p.m. and 81.2 degrees!
