06-18-2005 US Open at Pinehurst #2
Saturday, June 18, we totally lounged like bums all day. Which I sometimes don't think we do enough of. After breakfast we cut up our strawberries and water melon we got at the farmer's market yesterday. It takes some strategic planning to get it all in the frig. Around 11:00 I went out to put my dried and de-sanded shoes back in the truck. I took the time to replenish the golf balls in my bag. Our neighbor, Bud, from Palacios, TX, came by and we chatted. He's a retired Power Plant Operator from STNP (South Texas Nuclear Plant; 16% of which is owned by the City of Austin.) Bud and his wife had trouble selling their house after he retired so he came up here to do some contract training at the Cook Power Plant in Bridgeman, MI, for nine months (March - December); that's how he ended up in this campground, they are one of the few open year round up here. His house just sold, they are closing on August first. They hope to move to Arkansas where his son lives and is a State Park Employee in southwestern Arkansas.
At 11:30 the US Open started and we parked in front of the tube until 6:00. Retief Goosen leads after the third round. Jason Gore, a qualifier, is tied for second but the real winner today was the golf course. We had leftover chicken andouille pizza for lunch. After the golf Bob checked the fluids and pressures prior to our move on Monday. Then we took a half hour walk around the campground. This place is packed. There was a BBQ going on every fifteen feet. Most of the campers are locals - license plates are all IL, IN, and MI. When we're in these places where everybody comes here every weekend and they all know each other, it really is the only time that I feel lonely on the road.
It's 7:00 p.m. and we're looking at brochures, planning our next adventure. Another gorgeous day with a high of 68 degrees.
