06-16-2005 Golf at Elbel Muni, South Bend, IN

Thursday, June 16, it was great sleeping in the chilly weather last night. This morning the sky was so blue--I don't think I've ever seen it that blue. The paper called them 'white puffy clouds.' We call them 'Minnesota clouds' because that was the way they always looked at Hay Lake in Minnesota. After breakfast we got the soggy shoes and socks from yesterday out of the back of the truck and Bob put the spare trailer tire back under the trailer so we could get our golf clubs out. Then we headed to Elbel Municipal Golf Course, about 20 minutes north of here where we tried to play Monday but they were having an 'outing.' Believe it or not they were having another 'outing' today. We got there around 12:45 and the guy said he didn't have a tee time until 2:14. So we decided to hit some range balls ($5.00 for balls and a $5.00 deposit on the bag they came in!) Then we putted and chipped for a while and finally got sent off behind two guys with their 9 and 10 year-old sons. The kids were pretty good but the dads were hackers. They had the whole golf course backed up before the day was over.

We were joined on the first tee by Bill who was also a walker. He had one of those new 3-wheel pull-carts, a Sun Mountain model, that he didn't think was engineered very well. Bill lived nearby in Niles, MI (we almost went to a campground there instead of Mini Mountain.) This was one of the most gorgeous days I can ever remember playing golf. The temperature was about 68 degrees and there was no humidity. It was a little windy but not too serious. Bob and Bill played the Blue Tees at 6,300 yards with a challenging slope rating of 119. I played the Red Tees at 5,750 yards, long for me so I thought the slope should have been more than 116. Bob played really well, especially on the front. I played the back much better than the front. Bill was a good player; said he was a one handicap.

The course was in great shape and the greens were perfect. All of the holes were interesting. We played a slow round with the foursome in front of us holding up everybody until Bill told them to get a move on about hole #14 and they took off after that. We were really hungry by the time we finished at 6:20. We said goodbye to Bill and drove south on 31 to Route 2 and stopped in Top Notch Restaurant. Bob had the Top Notch Salad that I enjoyed so much on our first day here in South Bend. I had the Spring Combination Salad with Chicken Salad. We both chose that great Poppy Seed dressing. We splurged on dessert-chocolate fudge cake. This restaurant is also a bakery and they had all new desserts in the big case up front. That cake was to-die-for. We got a paper outside and gas on the way home. The security gate was fixed back at Mini Mountain so we needed our gate pass for the first time since our arrival. Much to our surprise it worked!

We read the paper and were watching TV when the phone rang. What a surprise, the phone has been dead the whole time we've been here. It was Patti. We talked for 3 or 4 minutes and got cut off. How weird. Sorry about that! Bob and I searched the brochures and Trailer Life CD for our next campground since we plan to move tomorrow. We have a place in Jones, MI, picked out--Camelot Campgrounds.

It's 11:53 p.m. and 59.5 degrees.
