06-11-2005 Damon's Grill and Groceries

Saturday, June 11, we slept in late and lounged around after our long moving day yesterday. I worked on my journal for a bit while Bob scoped out the local golf courses. We took the boat off of the truck and around 1:30 we drove into South Bend. We took State Rd. 2 to the downtown area and went north on Hwy 31 past Notre Dame. Bob said he was here for a football game in the late 60's but doesn't remember a thing. I've never been here but all we saw of the campus was the 9-hole golf course as we drove by on Hwy 31. Soon we found Damon's Grill and stopped for lunch.

Bob had ribs and BBQ pork. I had pork tenderloin. Yes, my friends, we are back in the north where they serve 'real' BBQ sauce (apologies to my Texas friends) that is thick and is grilled 'on' the meat. I substituted a sweet potato casserole for mashed potatoes but when my order came out I had both! A 'to go box' was in order. This place has four huge video screens with different TV channels on each. We could choose the one we wanted to listen to from our table. We tuned in to the Cubs baseball game. Our waited directed us to the nearest mailbox then we took Hwy 20 back to the loop just to see different sights. Most of South Bend has kind of folded up. At least the parts east of Notre Dame where we cruised around. We stopped in a Kroger was saw back on State Rd. 2 and got a few groceries and a South Bend Tribune.

Back home we lounged and read the papers and our brochures again. I tried to call my nephew, Nathaniel, in Chicago to tell him we're only 70 miles away. But we're in a roaming area and it is raining so I couldn't get service. I'll try him again later. I'm catching up five days worth of journal pages. It's funny how I get behind when I know there's no chance of connecting to the Internet for a while.

It's 8:25 p.m. and 72.7 degrees. This afternoon's shower did not cool it off much. Hurricane Arlene, the first of the season, off the Gulf Coast is sending rain straight up through the Midwest. Rain is forecast through Tuesday and then mercifully a cold front passes through. Last year this area, called Michiana, had only one day above 89 degrees. They've had three already so far in June! The big debate in the paper for this area is whether four counties are going to choose the Eastern or Central Time Zone now that Indiana is going to DST.
