06-08-2005 Surgery for The Beast; Golf at Shadowood, Seymour, IN

Wednesday, June 8, we got in a time warp early this morning. Bob was looking at Indiana's map, scoping our next stop when he said "Wait a minute, it's not 9:30, we crossed a time zone just north of Mammoth Cave." We are now in the Eastern Time zone. He reset a few clocks but it is a mystery why the Atomic clock didn't change. After breakfast we went down to the office and rain into Betty, the owner, and asked her the time. She laughed and said 11:20. We were confused because that was the same as yesterday's Central Time Zone. She said "We never change the time here!" No Daylight Savings Time so our clocks were correct in spite of changing time zones. But she said they elected a new governor this year and the first thing he did was implement DST starting next year. She didn't sound too happy about it either. Anyway, on top of waking u and not remembering where we are in this strange lifestyle; today we didn't even know 'when' we were!

Our biggest issue however is a strange noise coming from the left front tire. Larry, in the office, pointed out a GM dealer on Hwy 31 N. So after taking the boat off, we got gas and the Columbus paper then headed into town. Along the way we looked for car wash addresses we had copied from the Yellow Pages but none were big enough for our RV. Columbus is noted for architectural contributions by famed contemporary architects. Many of these buildings and public edifices were funded by Cummins Engine. The designer of The Gateway Arch in St. Louis built a church here. As we passed by the Columbus exit on I-65 Bob spotted the Holiday Inn he stayed at way back in the 70's when he attended class here for Cummins. North of town we found Wiese Chevrolet and made an appointment for tomorrow to get the truck looked at. Then we continued north on 31 to I-65, exit 76, where we found a truck wash. We stopped and asked and discovered they do RVs so we'll hit them on the way out of town tomorrow.

We had lunch at Max & Erma's, a 'Hometown Columbus Favorite'. I had an Italian Wedding Soup to-die-for with a Village Salad. Bob had the Hula Salad. Since it was our first visit she gave us a sample of their famed Tortilla Soup and a $5.00 discount off of our next visit. After lunch, around 1:30, we went south on I-65 to Seymour, IN, to golf at Shadowood, site of the 1997 and 2004 Indiana Public Links Championships.

Bob played the tips at 6,709 yards with a 127 slope rating, and I played the forward tees at 5,276 yards and a slope of 117. This was the best grass we've encountered this year. The course was well-maintained. We hit balls on the driving range to warm up first (not hard to 'warm up' in these temperatures!) They didn't even blink in the Pro Shop when we said we'd walk. And the course is very walkable except for 92 degrees temperatures and 87% humidity and 50-plus years of age! Later the weatherman says the heat index was 103. Thunderstorms flared up about halfway through but we didn't get any rain; just thunder and one big black cloud. It was slightly cooler for about forty minutes but then the sun came out and the humidity almost did us in. I shot really well for me: tied Bob on the front nine and he only got me by two strokes on the back after I choked on a Par 4. We were both hot and tired by the time we finished at 6:45 (Indiana EST!)

Back home the office was closed already so we'll have to tell them in the morning that we're staying another day. We made a good decision this morning and left the A/C on, thankfully in this heat. Showers were heaven but once again there's no sewer hookup so we have to conserve. We don't really need to be careful for just a few days but with the pending car troubles you never know how long you'll be stuck somewhere.

It's 8:40 p.m. and 77.3 degrees.
