06-07-2005 Movin' On to Columbus, IN

Tuesday, June 7, we packed up on a muggy morning but at least the skies were overcast. There was only one park model trailer left in our campground section. We traced our steps to Mammoth Cave, north on I-65, after slamming the brakes on to avoid a guy with no brake/tail lights on Hwy 31E. From there it was I-65 north the whole way. Louisville, population 530,000, was our first major city to pull The Beauty smack dab through the middle of downtown. It looked remarkably like St. Louis, sans The Arch, but both are old river towns. The immediate downtown was okay traffic wise at 1:30 as we went through but just south of Louisville was a nightmare. Twenty or thirty semis passed us on the right and left at the same time. We were doing 65 in a 55 mph zone pulling 10,000 lbs. and they were running us over. The bridge over the Ohio River downtown was backed up in the southbound lanes due to construction. It looked like they were painting the old bridge. Fortunately the northbound lanes were smooth sailing.

The whole way up I-65 we kept seeing muscle cars going south on I-65. There must be a show somewhere. Just south of Louisville there was a huge backup going south. Both lanes were backed up for miles. We never could determine what the holdup was. We were just glad we were going north. But it was amazing how many restored cars from the 50's, 60's, and 70's we saw. We stopped at the Indiana Visitor Center, our 12th State, at exit 19 where we picked up brochures. Around 3:30 we arrived in Columbus at Woods & Water Kampground , 8855 S. 200 W., Columbus, IN 47201, 812-342-1619. We set up quickly among some nice old trees and heated up our leftovers from Tumbleweed yesterday (we saw a TV commercial out of Louisville or Indianapolis for Tumbleweed.)

We relaxed and read our brochures, always one of my favorite things to do. I went to the office to mail some postcards and ask about their advertised central modem. No dice--out of order. Likely story! We paid $49.61 for two nights and that was for water and electric only, no sewer. On top of that they charged $2.00/day for A/C (you can tell we're 'up north') and $1.00 per pole to fish in the pond. But the laundry room was cheap, $1.00 for the washers, $.50 for the dryers. So I took up three loads while Bob checked our left front wheel on The Beast. It is making a weird noise. A trip to a Chevy dealer may be in order.

We were done in the laundry by 8:30. Back home we had a snack and crashed. Bob says I torture him by doing the laundry on Movin' day. It's 9:43 p.m. and 76.7 degrees. Apparently we have not gone far enough north yet!
