06-05-2005 Sell Out Crowd at the Cave

Sunday, June 5, Happy Anniversary to my Mom and Dad! We got up and got a move on this hot and muggy morning. Just up Hwy 31E we got gas and a paper. Inside I saw the lady and her tow-headed son, who sat in front of us yesterday at one of the music venues at the Games. She was all decked out in her Scottish maiden costume and ready for another day of festivities. We took Louis P. Nunn Memorial Parkway to Park City and wound our way through Mammoth Cave National Park to the visitors’ center. Three bus loads of cave tourists were just leaving and we had a bad feeling. Sure enough, the Grand Avenue tour that we wanted to do had sold out for the day. I had tried to call earlier but their administrative offices are closed on the weekends--go figure! But we really wanted to take the longer tour so we passed on the easier treks and paid for a spot on tomorrow's Grand Avenue tour. We're only about 25 minutes away from our campground at the State Park.

We drove down to Green River and saw the ferry. There was a wild turkey on the road on the way down there. We made our way in to Cave City and checked out an antique mall downtown that was closed on Sundays. In fact most everything, including Family Dollar was closed. So we took Hwy 90 back to Glasgow and found the brand new Wal-Mart and stopped in for a few things. Then Bob spotted Evergreen Chinese Buffet at Hwys 90 and 31E. Their buffet was much smaller than the two we liked in the Nashville area but they had some tasty items. The entire town of Glasgow seemed to be in there. Most of them decked out for Sunday church. The buffet was popular and we could see why. I liked the Sesame Chicken and the Mushrooms and Pork. And they had these little miniature footballs that were golden kernels of sweet corn, dipped in batter and deep fried. They were quite memorable.

We stopped at an antique place south of Glasgow on 31E that we had passed several times on the way back to the State Park. But we didn't find anything. Then we turned right where a sign led to a flea market and pulled in to this guy's garage and basement converted to junk rooms. He said he needed a hobby or he would've gone crazy in retirement. He was envious of our RV lifestyle but his wife said "No way, that's not for me."

Back at the State Park we read the paper until about 3:00. Then we got out of our long pants and cave clothes and got into golf clothes. The high is 94 degrees today and the humidity is about the same. Somebody told us it is 99 degrees today in Texas so we shouldn't be complaining. But I bet their humidity is not nearly so high. Anyway, like fools, we headed to the golf course in the heat of the day to get in 18 holes before sundown. We putted and chipped until we worked up a good sweat. I had a complete meltdown on the Par 3 second hole when I putted completely off the severely sloped green. But I shook it off and recovered after that. Bob had a meltdown too but he waited until later on. It was very hot out there. We were suffering and we were in a cart!

I have to admit I was kind of disappointed when we got to the 12th hole and there were no bagpipes playing. A few of the Highlanders were sitting around their tents but most were packing up. We were glad to finish and head home to the A/C. The guy who collected our cart at the end was from Michigan and was telling Bob about a great river for fishing near Saginaw. Back home we were waiting for the water heater to do its thing so we could take showers when we noticed there was no water at the kitchen sink. We thought the State Park had lost service. But Bob went out to investigate and discovered that someone had tampered with our connection at the RV. It looks like one of the many campers around us who left this afternoon while we were golfing thought they might help themselves to our quick-connect faucet, regulator and hose. But they couldn't get it lose from the little door that locks over the faucet so they left in a hurry. But they managed to pot the connection loose. Fortunately for us, we avoided a trip to Wal-Mart in order to take showers tonight! Bob had us back in business in no time.

It's 9:54 p.m. and 76.5 degrees. I called Mom and Dad to wish them a happy 57th wedding anniversary. They said it was 94 degrees in St. Charles, MO, today too.
