05-03-2005 Movin' On to Lebanon, TN

Tuesday, May 3, believe it or not we packed up without incident and left on eight fully inflated tires this morning. It was a white knuckle ride for me down Monte Sano but Bob seemed cool. The mountains are less stressful for the person controlling the brake pedal! It was a high of 62 and wool with a mile-high blue sky. We left at 10:39 a.m. Traffic was good out of Huntsville. Just a short way north on Hwy 231 we crossed the Tennessee border to log our tenth state on our journey.

Highway 231 is a scenic US highway route and it got narrow and twisty between Fayetteville and Shelbyville. It was more docile after that. We stopped for gas in Shelbyville. At Lebanon we took I-40 west to exit 232 and followed the signs to Countryside Resort, 2100 Safari Camp Road, Lebanon, TN 37090, (615) 449-5527. The first question the lady asked us at the office was "Do you have a reservation?" There was a Family Motorcoach Convention here in Lebanon this coming weekend. After our hearts sunk into our shoes she found us a back-in with full hookups for a week and charged us $147.49 with our Good Sam discount.

Bob expertly backed in to this shorter-than-usual site. We had to use our leveling blocks which we haven't had to do in a while. We traveled 128 miles and three hours later we were all set up under a completely leafed-out maple tree. This camp ground has a scenic rating of "9" in Woodall's Campground Guide with "10" being the best. There are lots of trees in rolling hills, a fishing pond and even a 9-hole golf course around the property (not very well maintained as golf courses go however.) We were starving so we set out towards Lebanon and found Demo's Steak & Spaghetti House. The food was excellent. Bob had Baked Chicken Soup and Seafood Stuffed Potato. I had Greek Chicken Pasta. It reminded me of my Mousaka. They have these heavenly sesame rolls--very sinful.

Downtown Lebanon is the Antique Capital of Tennessee. We did three antique stores from 4:00 to 5:00. We'll have to go back, there's lots more places. I found one golf postcard. They have a nightmare traffic circle downtown which Bob pointed out we would have encountered with the trailer if we had continued on northward on 231. Yikes! Back home we walked the grounds and met an older couple in the laundry who live here. They came from Arlington, TX. Originally he was from Ohio and she was from Kentucky. We said goodbye and walked the 9-hole par-3 golf course. It is very rough but would be a good place to practice your short game. We asked in the office about a newspaper. She said it was "not the season yet." They do have a phone modem hookup on the porch. Yeah!

Back home we read our pile of brochures from the office, watched NCIS and House. We were tired from our travels but glad to have a spot and happy that our tires had a good day.

It's 9:35 p.m. and 52.7 degrees.
