Directory of Summer Programs 2004

©2004 by Barbara J. Hampton

Jump to Directory Table

Important Notes: The information in this website has been collected from print and online materials prepared by the organizers of the individual programs, with an emphasis on programs in Connecticut and the Northeast United States, although a small number of highly-regarded programs from other areas are also listed. Programs were selected for inclusion based on the reputation of the sponsors and programs. Inclusion does not imply endorsement of the program by Barbara J. Hampton, Connecticut Association for the Gifted, Inc., or its officers, directors, or members. If you would like to recommend additional programs for future editions of this directory, please contact the webmaster.

We have endeavored to make this directory current, correct, clear, and concise. Your suggestions for corrections or improvement are welcome.

How to Use this Directory: Programs are listed in the table below alphabetically by sponsoring organization and/or location. You may click on the links in the Alphabet Table (immediately above the directory table, below) to jump to the various sections of the directory. Contact information as available from the program is included. Please note that the location of the program is not necessarily the operator of the program. Also, some programs are run in multiple locations.

Enrollment

Deadlines for applications vary widely. Deadlines for financial aid applications and nomination to the program may be earlier. If the deadline has passed for a program of interest, plan to begin the application process much earlier next year. Contact the sponsor to see if you can be included on a mailing list to receive program materials for next year when they become available.

Selectivity is roughly described as "competitive" (a small percent of applicants selected, frequently requiring nomination by teachers, essays, competitions, etc.); "selective" (program screens applicants for appropriate pre-requisite study and/or identification as gifted/talented student); "open" (students self-select program based on interest and experience).

Dates noted for the actual program may represent a single, inclusive program or multiple sessions; specific information should be obtained from the programs print or online materials.

Eligibility

Ages and Grades: In this directory, grade level has been standardized as the grade the student will be in the fall ("rising"), labeled as "Gr." Some program materials will refer to the grade which the student has completed prior to the program, so examine this information carefully. Where eligibility is based on age, no label is used.

Resident/Day programs: In addition to the traditional local day camp option, some families incorporate a distant day camp program within their family vacation plans, with family members staying at an area hotel or campground while students attend a program.

Pace/Level of Instruction

Exploratory: Assumes minimal prior learning in subject; focus is on exposing student to new subject areas for future study or career interests.

Enrichment: Extends learning beyond levels or subjects typically offered to age-peers; not generally sequential with school curriculum.

Advanced: Assumes an existing knowledge or skill base in subject area.

Accelerated: Students progress through curriculum at a significantly faster pace than would be expected of age-peers; credit sometimes available at sponsoring school or home school.

College-Level: Curriculum includes AP courses, standard college courses, or college-level seminars; generally eligible for credit at sponsoring college and elsewhere.

Targeted Populations: Some programs indicate that preference is given to specific groups.

Subjects: General summary of range of subjects offered; when program includes access to full range of undergraduate courses, the term "Liberal Arts" is used. "Technology" incorporates computer hardware, software, applications, and robotics.

Cost: Although some programs entail substantial program, room, and board fees, there are often scholarship funds available from the sponsor. A few of the most selective programs are fully funded by the sponsor or require only minimal contribution by the student. Typically, the deadlines for such programs are in the Fall or early Winter prior to the program, so be sure to investigate these programs well in advance and familiarize yourself with their requirements.
