Finding Library Materials for Kids on the Internet
iConn – the Connecticut Digital Library. This service is free to all Connecticut residents. You will need the bar code number from your library card, or you can access it from internet computers at the school or public library.
1. Go to http://www.biblio.org/Southbury/ ; then click on “iConn.org” on the menu on the left side of the page.
2. Click on “Access from Home.
3. Enter your public library barcode number
4. Select one of the databases. Infotrac Kids’ Edition is designed for grades K-6; Infotrac Junior Edition is designed for grades 5-9; Infotrac Student Edition is designed for grades 9-12. There are also several general and professional databases for adults.
Internet Public Library Kidspace – This public service website is maintained by the University of Michigan with links to websites for kids selected by librarians.
1. Go to http://www.ipl.org/div/kidspace/; then click on one of the categories to see lists with links to helpful reference websites designed for kids.
2. Go to IPL home to access pages with reference websites for teens, general users, librarians, etc.
Public Library Online Catalogue. From your home computer, you can search the catalogue of books at the Southbury Public Library as well as nearly all the other public libraries in Connecticut.
1. Go to http://www.biblio.org/Southbury/ ; then click on “Bibliomation-Southbury” on the menu on the left side of the page. This accesses Southbury’s collection.
2. For other library catalogues, click on “Bibliomation-Global”.
3. The catalogue will show which items are owned by the library and also which ones are checked out already.
American Library Association Great Sites – These are sites recommended for kids by professional children’s librarians.
