According to general relativity, massive objects will distort spacetime in such a way that it will act as a lens, similar to an optical lens, and will allow us to observe background objects.  Depending on the nature of the source and the geometry of the system, we observe background objects as a ring, multiple images, and distortions about the source and using the lensing equations we can estimate the mass of the source.
