Individuals most likely to
develop MPD (DID) have endured repetitive, overwhelming and
often life-threatening trauma at a sensitive developmental stage of
Childhood.
MPD (DID) is often referred to as a highly creative survival
technique, it allows individuals enduring hopeless circumstances to
prevent areas of healthy functioning.
Dissociation and switching are automatic responses to anxiety for
us, even in non-abusive situations.
The pattern of defensive dissociation remains with us and causes
turmoil, dysfunction, and chaos at work, social and daily
activities.
DEFINITIONS
Here are
some definitions that will help you to understand the terminology
that we use in discussing MPD/DID.
"System" - The structure of relationships within the internal
work of an individual who has DID. Although each persons system in
unique, there are several, recurring metaphors that those with MPD
use to describe how they function. Similar to the way that I refer
to Sandi's Packs tunnels, and levels.
"Host" -
The personality with the most control of the system on any given
day.
"Alter" - A mental entity created by a person by a process known as
dissociation
for the purpose of operating the body so that the person will
survive life-threatening traumas. ; Also a label for all
personalities, fragments and members of an MPD system.
"Personality" - an entity with a firm, persistent and well-rounded
sense of self and a characteristic and consistent pattern of
behavior and feelings in response to
stimuli.
"Fragment"
- an entity similar to a personality but with a more limited range
of function, emotion or history
"Trigger" - An event, object person, etc. that sets a series of
thoughts in motion or reminds a person of some aspects of their
traumatic past. You can be aware of triggers or unaware as to what
is triggering your memories
"Co-Consciousness" - an awareness of one personality of the
feelings, actions and thoughts of another.
"Splitting" - the act of creating another personality
"Switching" - Changing personalities between already existing ones.
Changes between these personalities, or states of consciousness are
described as switching.
"Mirror Personality" - a personality that is distinct from but
ultimately tied to another
"Fusion" - the unification of personalities in a system
"Integration" - Similar to Fusion, although integration is the
complete process while fusion is only a preliminary
step.
