I am a member of the medievalists known as the
SCA: the Society for Creative Anachronisms
(actually, I'm a lapsed member and need to renew…).
Consider the Middle Ages the way it could have been.
SCAdians (pronounced SKAY-dians) recreate this feudal era for "private" events and "demo" events (such as the annual Lakewood,
New Jersey state
Ren Faire) and merely omit plagues, religious persecution, etc.
Each August they hold a fantastic and almost unbelievable event called
Pennsic War,
held in far western Pennsylvania.
It lasts ("over") a week and you have to experience it to believe it, but it really cannot be called an event for those Super Absolutely New to the SCAdain experience.
Check out their home page for further information.
My friend
Andrew Cross
is a member of the
Darke Horde,
the Mongolian household and the largest household in the SCA.
While
Texas state
born (and recently returned there with no intent to leave) Andrew isn't Mongolian (in fact his SCA persona is that of a Celtic storyteller of powerful tales named Gaelwyn ab Taliessin, Shadow Weaver), as a brother of the Darke Horde, he now goes under the Mogel derivation of his SCAdian name: Gürin Kökö-nidü.
Early into his re-entry into the SCA, Andrew had discovered that he is a naturally talented medieval garb maker.
If you've always wanted a medieval tunic or such, check out
his site.
He barters more than actually charging for his impressive work (the true American way!).
Mine own SCAdian persona is Badger Glave of Silvermist: a nomadic pagan wanderer who is a seeker of hidden truths, arcane wisdoms, and of fun. Each year, prior to my moving to the west coast, I would attend the Sterling Forest Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo, New York state, and whenever we attend such functions of course we always go in garb. I've attended a few local Renaissance Faires (California state); they're a little more laid back and far less commercialized.
My friend Bill Cooper is a confirmed Scottish historian, as well as an accomplished D&D DM. While he is a Ren Faire person also, he's not actually a SCAdian himself. His site is a gold mine if you are researching early Scottish history.
By the way, due to our "government" being as paranoid as it is creating the populace, the FBI keeps tabs on the SCA, considering (and, based on results, fearing) the fun and harmless society as "a subversive organization," due to the fact that as part of the fantasy pretending, that we "honour a 'foreign' potentate;" meaning the current "ruler" of the area Of The Known World.
Yeah, well, based on results, some ("government") organizations have Just Too Much Time On Their Hands…
