Work
At present...
Right now I'm at
Generac Power Systems.
The work environment isn't as posh as I was used to in Silicon Valley
but I like the people. Hopefully, somewhere down the road, I may
convince folks here that we should design software before
trying to code it. Meanwhile, I'm subverting the MS-loyalty of the
IS department by helping the new guys become better acquainted with
Linux.
This is the first job I've ever had where
I am not allowed to run Linux on my desktop.
I've managed a state-wide WAN configuration and contributed to the
development of application software and device drivers on several
modern operating systems but, here, I'm not allowed to install my
preferred tools on my desktop. It's pretty demeaning.
At least I've got Cygwin.
Cool job, while it lasted...

I was working for
Transmeta since August of
2000. For the first year, I was in the Linux group working mostly
on the "Midori" project.
It was way cool to be hanging around with
Dan Quinlan,
Claudio Fleiner,
Jeff Uphoff,
Pat Mochel,
Nathan Laredo,
Dave Taylor,
Seb Kuzminski,
and of course Linus Torvalds.
By the end of my first year, the focus of the company had shifted
from "neat-o cool" to thermal cool
and the Linux group was split up to use our talents in other areas.
After that, I was in the Systems Characterization group, using more of
my electronics and testing skills again. Lots of Perl with some
PostgresQL.

Before that...
Most recently before Transmeta, I was "Key Software Engineer" for
Merge Technologies, Inc.,
a leader in medical imaging and healthcare systems integration.
Before Merge, I developed software at Cooper Power Systems'
R&D facility, designed automated test equipment for
Digalog Systems, and did both WAN management and revenue
meter specifications at Wisconsin Electric.
Résumé
As a professional, it's my responsibility to be aware of my own
proficiencies and of their value.
I keep my résumé
online as a matter of practice.
Miscellaneous
I used to occasionally teach a course on Linux at UWW.
Over the years I've built up quite a collection
of diverse and sometimes arcane skills to brag about. Most of
them I've done for fun, some for employment, a few only enough to say
that I did.
