There are two main organizations that assist with ensuring the quality and ethics of Marriage and Family Therapists,

1. The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT)
2. The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

Both of these sites have valuable information on what to expect from marriage and family therapy, and how to pick an ethical therapist.
The Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS )is the government board that oversees the licensing of Marriage and Family Therapists. At their site you will find information on ethics and definitions of marriage and family therapy.
