Thompson School District Cabling Standards

In June 1995, the School Board adopted the District's Strategic Plan for Technology. The Plan is rather extensive and covers many facets of technology.

Of particular importance to NetDay, Appendix B of the Strategic Plan incorporates by reference a "Telecommunications and Wiring Study" the District commissioned from a consulting firm in Boulder.

Cabling Recommendations and Standards are established in that report. A paraphrased and very brief synopsis of some of the more relevant recommendations and standards are presented here.

The NetDay model fits very nicely within the framework of the District Standards.

But always keep in mind the big picture. Obviously, we don't want to rip out the NetDay cabling as the remainder of the cabling plant is installed over the next few years.

Other Cabling Standards and Recommendations

Several other topics are discussed in the Telecommunications and Wiring Study, which are beyond the scope of this Web page.

These topics include:

Details for each school

The final section of the Telecommunications and Wiring Study contains a spreadsheet for each school and administrative site in the District.

This one-page per site spreadsheet shows the total number of locations of each category, along with the number of telephone and data cables projected to be installed into each area. An estimate of the total material and labor costs is also included.

A Final Note

The NetDay model is great. But in some cases, minor extensions to the NetDay model (such as running a Category 3 telephone cable along with the Category 5 data cables) can complete the District's cabling plant requirements for a classroom. Likewise, if you choose to cable all of the classrooms along one side of a hallway, dropping a few extra cables in a conference room might complete the District's cabling plant requirements for that entire section of the building.

NetDay's purpose is to put data cables into the classrooms. Don't perform these "minor extensions" if they will jeapordize your basic NetDay project.
