Garip Bulbul takes its name from two important
concepts in Turkish music: garip for the ineffable quality of longing evoked
in music and bulbul for the nightingale, the natural embodiment of musical
expression.

Garip Bulbul performs music of the Ottoman
Empire, a region which at its apex extended from its center in Anatolia
west to the Balkans, east to Egypt and Syria, and south to North Africa.
Garip Bulbul consists of Robyn Friend, tef and voice; Martha Mavroidi,
Lavta; Sonia Seeman on clarinet; Neil Siegel, tar and ud; and Ergun Tamer,
kanun.
