Persian Dance Discography

Persian Dance Music #3: Reng-ha-ye Irani. "Iranian Dance Music".

This is the third in the Caltex series of Persian dance music. As far as I know, all the remaining recordings in the Caltex series are synthesized pop music, and I cannot recommend them. This recording includes a re-release of one half of the music from the recording "Bejonbun" (Shake it!) cited above. The first half of the music on "Reng-ha-ye Irani" is different acoustic music that would be really good, but suffers from poor recording quality. Thus, half of this recording is excellent (but lacks some of the best stuff from the original Bejonbun), and half is good, but not useful for performance. You can order this CD from Caltex Records, 9045-A Eton Avenue, Canoga Park, California 91304, 818/700-8657.

The label on this recording is completely messed up. The titles below are what the label says; I also provide a description of what the music really is.

1. Bejonbun. "Classical" solo or group dance.

2. Khorram Abadi. Folkloric dance, Khorram Abad is in the southwest, but this music sounds more like the Caspian coast.
3. Bandari. If this is Bandari, it is not a very good example of it.
4. Naz. "Classical" solo or group dance; also a folk song.
5. Arabi. This is not Arabic, or belly-dance; it sounds like Khorram Abadi (south-western folkloric dance) is supposed to.
6. Reng-e Narenj. Folkloric, I can't tell from where.
7. Gol. This sounds like Shekufe from "Bejonbon"; good for classical dance.
8. Baba Karam. This is not Baba Karam; it is a drum solo, probably the same as Lale from Bejonbun; good for classical solo dance.
9. Bia Riz Bia. The first half of this cut is good for Jaheli-style classical solo dance; the second half is a very good Bandari piece.
10. Lezgi. This is not Lezgi (a Kavkaz dance), but is good for classical solo dance and has a good Jaheli-style section in it.
11. Shab. This is the last cut on this recording, and it is Arabic-style belly-dance music.
12. Bahar. (not on the recording)
13. Banafsheh. (not on the recording)
14. Jaheli. (not on the recording)
