Recipe for a Barathon
Ingredients:
6 neighborhood bars
6 miles total between bars.
200 runners and walkers (approx.).
6 beers per runner on racecourse.
More beers at finish (add to taste).
For post-race watermelon sacrifice:
1 Tutu-Man.
1 or 2 watermelons.
At least 1 vestal virgin (actual virginity not required).
1 samurai sword.
Liberal amounts of alcohol, endorphin, and sweat.
Directions:
1. Sprinkle 6 bars liberally throughout uptown New Orleans neighborhood, allowing 6 miles total distance
(more or less) between bars.
2. Have each contestant chug a beer at the start.
3. Have all contestants run through traffic from bar to bar, in sequence, drinking a beer at each
bar.
4. Furnish more beer to thirsty runners at finish line.
5. It's a race,
so hold a raucous awards ceremony, giving lovely parting gifts to each top finisher.
5˝ (new this year). Make each award winner do pushups.
6. For dessert, serve watermelon sacrifice.
Every year for 22 years, Ron Brinkman has cooked up this recipe. The race started as a club event
for the Tchoupitoulas Social Aid & Athletic Club. Tchoupitoulas is now mostly a memory, but thanks to Ron, the Barathon
continues.
