This organization founded by attorneys in 1979 advocates for stronger anticruelty laws and their enforcement.
Animal Rights International(ARI)
The mission of ARI is to reduce animal suffering by campaigning against cruel animal research practices, cruel farming practices, and promoting the reduction of the consumption of animal products. This site provides information regarding ARI's projects and vegitarian resources.
Animal Welfare Information Center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agriculture Library (AWIC)
This Center provides extensive resources on a range of topics including: farm animals; zoo, circus and marine animals; animal testing alternatives. The focus of the Center is to provide information products, services, and activities to help the regulated community with employee training and to promote the humane care and use of animals by providing information on alternatives (improved methods of animal experimentation which could reduce or replace animal use or minimize pain and distress to animals).
Animal Welfare Institute
The Animal Welfare Institute seeks to reduce the sum total of pain and fear inflicted on animals by people focusing particularly on the following areas: animals used in experimentation; animal factories which raise and slaughter pigs, cows, chickens and other animals; torture inflicted on furbearing animals by steel jaw leghold traps and wire snares; the protection of threatened and endangered species; the protection of marine life against the proliferation of human-generated ocean noise; and the preservation of the ban against commercial whaling. Doris Day Animal League
The Doris Day Animal League merged with the Humane Society of the United States in 2006. It is a nonprofit, national, citizen's lobbying organization working to improve the humane treatment of animals by working with the U.S. Congress, government agencies, and state and local officials to pass new laws and enforce existing laws that reduce the suffering of animals. The site provides links to publications, links to an extensive list of resources, information on current League campaigns, and a legislative update.
Humane Society of the United States
The largest animal protection organization in the United States focuses on disaster relief, legal campaigns, mobile veterinaray clinics, educational programs, enforcement of animal protection laws, and animal sanctuaries. Access information about pets, legislation, and emergency services.
Humane USA
Humane USA is an animal protection political action committee formed leaders of major animal protection organizations. This PAC legally contributes to animal-friendly candidates. The PAC endorses federal and state candidates and animal advocacy legislation. The site provices information on campaigns, lobbying, resources, political representatives, and more.
In Defense of Animals (IDA)
IDA is a national organization dedicated to ending animal cruelty and exploitation especially in research. The site provides resources on how to conduct effective advocacy events and efforts, tools to investigate,critique, and publicly expose wasteful animal research projects, suggested reading materials, and more.
National Audubon Society
Audubon's mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats. Access information about birds, their habitat, ecosystem restoration, the Endangered Species Act, global warming, energy, educational resources, and more.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
PETA focuses on the four areas of advocacy in which animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: factory farms; in laboratories; in the clothing trade; and in the entertainment industry. Other issues include the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. The site provides an action center, lifestyle suggestions, forums, and a blog.
World Animal Net (WAN)
WAN provides a directory of 16,000 animal protection societies worldwide. Access to a PDF file of the book, Professional Animal Protection Society Management is provided. The site also provides access to the Animal Welfare Education Database, campaign tools, information on global issues, and links to other resources.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
WWF is focused on conserving the planet’s natural resources through a global reach and with a foundation in science, action on local and global levels, and delivery of innovative solutions that meet the needs of both people and nature. The site has links to publications and resources covering a broad range of topics including marine science, conservation social science, species modeling, ecological data sets, the WildFinder Database, ecoregions, scientists, and more.
