Our backyard
is rectangular with mature landscaping: lawn, and mature trees along
the surrounding fence, and planting along the backside of the house.
A previous owner had installed a wooden trellis over the patio area,
and had built a large wooden deck behind the patio.
Since the
neighboring lots to the left (south/west) are higher in elevation,
we have wooden retaining walls on two sides of the fence surrounding
the lot. The picture on the top right shows a bit of the landscaping
as we found it.
We thought
about whether to keep the deck, and finally concluded on cutting it
in half - it is a nice feature, but we felt it was too dominating
for the size of the backyard.
We replaced
the retaining wall on the back of the lot, and removed the one too
the side. We renewed the lawn as a more defined feature and
installed planting boxes and a flower bed where the deck had been
taken away, and finally, we replaced most of the plants, except for
the trees and larger bushes along the fence.
Overall we
hope that we have achieved a more open, pleasant and playful look
compared to the previous landscaping. |
