Spring 2008 |
Out exterior has now
been repainted, which was a fairly straightforward job and also
aspired us to clean up the overall exterior. As part of the project
the trellis over the patio had to go as well - it felt too "heavy"
for the house, and with it gone we have more light in the living
room as well |

Summer 2007 |
A project long on the
list was the remodel of the master bath. While not original, the
last remodel must have been 20-30 years ago and it showed. When
moving in we had replaced the vanity cabinets and shower enclosure;
this time around the remodel was more substantial. Our goals were to
create a more contemporary look, and to create more space |
| Spring 2007 |
Replaced the tar &
gravel roof with a new Durolast roof. We were not exactly sure how
old the roof was, however, it seemed to be a good idea to look for
something more efficient. As part of the roofing we added insulation
to the roof for the cold season, and the roof itself is supposed to
keep the house cooler during the summer months. After the first year
with the new roof, we believe it does make a difference in both
summer and winter, however, it is really impossible to quantify and
attribute e.g. heating cost to the new roof - there are too many
variables at play. |

Fall 2004 |
Removed wood burning stove in
living room fireplace and replaced with contemporary fireplace door and tools.
The stove did not work very well in the first place, and also did not
match the contemporary style of the house. The fireplace door
was a custom order due to the dimension of our fireplace |

2004 |
In preparation for an eventual
roof replacement project, and also to improve looks and insulation,
closed all gaps between ceiling boards with silicone |
|
Summer 2004 |
Removed the oleander
and re-planted the side yard next to the bedrooms. The oleander
required lot of trimming work and blocked light to the bedrooms.
|
| Summer
2003 |
Re-painted the exterior trim and
front door in order to remove the last of the 'brown/beige'
treatment |
| Spring
2003 |
Re-wired phone lines from the NID
to all existing jacks, and installed additional wiring and jacks.
All bedrooms, and family room now have CAT-5 wiring. This improved
DSL reliability and quality. The wiring is currently external to the
house - plan to migrate to internal when replacing the roof. |
| Spring
2003 |
Installed Satellite Dish and
wiring to support both Cable TV and Satellite TV into the house |
| Spring
2003 |
Replaced exterior door in 2nd
bathroom to improve lighting and security, and replaced bathroom
window with state of the art double-pane (this was the last original
window) |
| Fall
2002 |
Replaced heater. We
noted that the radiant heat did not reach all rooms, and suspected that
the heater, which was the original one installed in 1960, did not
produce sufficient throughput anymore. The new heater was installed
without any flaws. As part of the installation we were able to confirm
that the radiant heat pipes are not leaking, and we are now able to heat
all rooms. We worked
with Anderson heating, and
it turned out that the person who replaced our heater was actually
the grandson of the person who had put in the original heater back in
1960, the old heater still had his signature and date on it.
