02-24-2005 Cold Rain, The Boiling Point and Lost in Yonkers

Thursday, February 24, I awoke to find standing water surrounding the trailer. Fortunately, the creek just behind our back wheels is at the same level as yesterday. I put a pot of potatoes on to boil since we now have plenty of propane. It didn't take long the steam up every window in the place. So much so that neither of us noticed two of our neighbors in the circle had left; the McKenzie Montana travel trailer that's been here since before we arrived, and the Class A with the red jeep that came while we were doing laundry.

After breakfast we had long, hot showers, enjoying the smug felling of a backup propane bottle once more. I got out the laptop and did some much-needed backing up of files on the hard drive. Bob called the guy about power washing the RV, whose name we found in the laundry room the other day. He didn't answer his phone so we didn't leave a message. But about a half an hour later he called us back; caller ID! He quoted us a price for washing and waxing our rig; $6.00 per foot. But he was unsure what he would charge for just washing it. He said he would call us around 4:30 and maybe come by and see our RV and give us a price quote. Bob didn't think he sounded too interested in doing it. Of course I didn't blame him with rain coming down in buckets. He probably thought we were nuts, although he never asked us when we would like this done.

Around one o'clock we headed south on Hwy 90 to R & M's Boiling Point, "Specializing in Boiled Crabs, Crawfish and Shrimp." We made a mad dash for the door in a driving rain. A northerly wind was blowing in some very chilly air. We scooted past a herd of people with umbrella under the porch who were trying to get up the nerve to run to their cars. Once inside, I ordered a grilled shrimp Po'boy and Bob got the stuffed shrimp. We split a crab au gratin appetizer.

There were lots of locals in this place for lunch. The guy behind us ordered a big tin tray of boiled crawfish. There were two sinks located in the dining area to wash your hands after diving into these messy little critters. After we ate our fill, we fought the rain again to go to the Tourist Information Center in New Iberia. They were very accommodating and let us plug the laptop into their modem outlet. But I kept getting an error message that "A digital (PBX) line was detected: your modem only accepts analog phone connections." Where is my tech support when I need it? I couldn't find anything in the help menu to tell me if I just needed to select some option buried 15 menus down in my Modem Connection files, or if I need some kind of adapter on my modem connection. So we failed in our attempt to 'get connected.' Bob tried to browse on their PC while I was in the midst of my frustration. But the speed was so slow he never got a single web page to load. The best laid plans of mice and men.....

We stopped for a paper and came back home in the pouring rain. Lake Pontchartrain had formed out in front of The Beauty. We had to park across the circle in an empty RV site. We doubted anyone would be coming in the rest of the day in this weather. But we were wrong. A Class A arrived while we were reading the paper and backed into a site at the back of the circle. My hat is off to them for moving on a rainy day like this. It makes me think they have a family emergency. Either that or they are way more comfortable with moving down the road than we are.

About 6:15 we put on our semi-fancy (for RVers) duds and drove into Lafayette to the Cites de Arts theatre on Third and Vine to see a play; Lost in Yonkers. The rain had stopped, so once we tip-toed out to the truck we had pretty smooth sailing. The traffic wasn't even too bad by this time. In spite of darkness just settling in we found our destination on the first try and only circled the block once before pulling into a parking space. Meters are free after 6:00 p.m. The rain had stopped so our half a block walk to the theatre was pleasant even though it is a cool evening. Well, we should have known everything was going too well. The lobby was deserted and the white board said 'Thurs. evening--dance rehearsal.' So we walked around outside for a bit since we were early. A flier on the door was advertising "Lost in Yonkers-March 3-23. The brochure we had said the play started February 24. A phone number was listed so I called and asked if there was a performance tonight. The guy said no, the play doesn't start until next Thursday.

So we were all dressed up with no place to go! Next time we won't trust the brochure. No big loss though since it was only a ten minute drive from our RV Park and they rain was nice enough to stop. We almost squeezed some culture into our lives. Better luck next time. Like true-blue Americans we returned home and watched CSI! After that I called my friend Glenda. We had a nice chat. She said she was ready for an upcoming trip she is taking in March and would go 'The good Lord willing and the creek don't rise.' I told her not to say that part about the creek because it has been raining for three solid days here and our RV is backed right up to a creek. It's the first thing I check every morning when I get up. It is always a big spirit lifter to chat with Glenda.

We have both heaters cranked up and I'm under a big afghan. The low is supposed to be around 40 degrees tonight.
