02-12-2005 Hiking the Hen House Unit Trail, Martin Dies, Jr. State Park

Saturday, February 12, I was up at 7:15 a.m. I put on a warm jacket and took my coffee and the camera outside. I walked around the circle and sat on a picnic table enjoying the rest of my coffee. The sun just won't break on through but it is pretty warm anyway. The neighbors in the SURV are still sleeping; only their lawn chairs are gathered in a circle outside of their rig.

After breakfast we take a 2.5 mile hike through the swamp. We saw no gators. It has been a while since we walked and our legs tired early. The path was pretty dry considering all the rain this area has been getting.B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, Martin Dies, Jr. State Park, Jasper, TX I took a few pictures but without the sun they look kind of gray. It is warm; 63 degrees. We get back by 1:00. Bob took the empty propane bottle off and we stopped in the Park office to ask where we could get it filled. We followed the directions and took 96 north out of Jasper looking for Amerigas. We saw three propane dealers on the way but all were closed on Saturday so we blew it off. They are working on 190 again today but we timed the flagman perfectly and didn't have to wait coming or going.

We ate at Novrosky's on 190 in Jasper; a southeast Texas chain. We split a grilled tuna steak on wheat and a vege-stuffed baked potato. It was all pretty good. Our next stop was Wal-Mart for gas. All of the pumps were busy so we got a paper from the same machine as yesterday and then returned to the gas station. Bob spent 10 minutes pumping $1.50 worth of gas on a broken pump and abandoned the effort. We went down the street to pay 1 penny more in a deserted gas station.

Bob snapped this shot of a trickling stream just off the hiking trail at Martin Dies Jr. State Park Back home we read the paper and watched the Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Tournament as the sun finally streamed through the long-leaf pines (they are similar to the Loblolly pines in Bastrop County that we had in our front yard at Cedar Hills, but not quite the same. It brought to mind Kasey Chambers' song that says "These pines are not mine. They don't smell as sweet as the ones in my mind." Great song!

We enjoyed a bowl of soup, watched CSI and finished the crosswords. I unhooked the camera from the charger. That was my first charging needed after all these weeks of using the camera. Pretty good 'battery management' as they say in the digital camera world.

It's 8:09 p.m. and 59.9 degrees.
