02-07-2005 Abuelos's at Barton Creek

Monday, February 7, it is rainy warm and humid again. Holly called around ten to wish us Bon Voyage. It was nice to chat for a bit. We traded movie picks. I told her to check out "Super Size Me" for sure. After a leisurely morning Bob and I finally get in gear and head into Austin stopping in Elgin for gas at $1.82 per gallon. The guy in the convenience store said he was rooting for the Patriots yesterday but he only watched the last part of the game. "Too big of a waste of time to watch the whole game!"

We drove to Bee Caves to drop off the golf clubs at First Tee. Of all the weird things, they had recently moved to new offices. A receptionist at the Bee Caves building gave me the new address. It was creepy to see all of those people in their cubes working. How quickly we move from one life to another with no looking back. Following our new directions to Capital of Texas Highway, we found Compass Bank and I carried my parcel of clubs to the 5th floor, suite 550, and found Jennifer, the gal who got me involved in First Tee to begin with. She said they had just moved to their new digs. I told her we played the First Tee golf course in Madison, Wisconsin. She knew the guy who started that program. The golf course there is first rate. She said the State of Wisconsin supports the First Tee there. Jennifer said to look her up when we stop traveling and get back into FirstTeeAustin.

Our next stop was just down the road at Barton Creek Mall. It has been a long time since I visited this mall. It was a favorite shopping spot when we lived in Jester Estates in West Austin. We accomplished some errands and made some wardrobe updates. We talked about eating lunch at the Food Court in the mall but a salesman who helped us recommended Abuelo's Mexican Food Embassy (Interior Mexican Cuisine) that was on the outer parking lot of the mall. So we checked it out and really enjoyed it. Bob had scallops and shrimp over pasta in a spicy sauce. I chose chicken medallions in a lemon caper sauce over pasta with mixed veges. I don't know if this place is a chain but I would certainly visit again. Everything was perfectly prepared with great attention to detail. I enjoyed the Cafe de Olla, a cinnamon Mexican coffee in an enormous crock mug.

Thus fortified we fought the 4:00 p.m. traffic out of Austin and stopped at the driving range just west of Elgin. The guy said he just happened by a few minutes earlier. He wasn't really planning on opening today because it was so wet. But he sold us a bucket of balls and said we had to hit from the mats only. A few minutes later another guy came so I guess we started something. I'm hitting my new clubs really well at the driving range. It remains to be seen what I'll do if we ever get back on a golf course.

On the way back home we stopped at Movie Gallery and returned our flicks. We also picked out a movie to redeem our freebie. We were glad to get back to our humble home on wheels. We settled in and enjoyed the paper and puzzles. We had a snack and watched '24' and CSI: Miami. Bob had the Atlas out this morning trying to plan a route out of here that doesn't involve pulling the trailer through Houston. I can't believe we'll be gone in a few days. We're both ready to hit the road and resume our adventures.

It's 10:29 p.m. and 51.7 degrees.
