Around 3:30 we headed to Glenda's. As we drive through downtown Elgin the streets are deserted. I guess everyone is at home in front of their TV sets. (A rather outdated term; do they still call them sets?!) It is 65 degrees out with 90% humidity. It feels like we're on another planet. There's a contract pending sign on LaNell's house across the street from Glenda. I sure hope the sale goes through for them. Glenda meets us at the door and we detect interesting aromas coming from the kitchen. Without too much delay we sit down to steaming bowls of beef stew and cornbread. We pace ourselves for snacks later. But we lobby for pie early and are treated to a whipped cherry delight.
The game starts on schedule and we try to cheer the Eagles on to victory but the heavily favored Patriots prevail. The game is close and the scoring goes back and forth evenly with a final score of 24-21 Patriots. The much-hyped commercials just don't have the pizzazz of prior years in my opinion. At half-time we break out spinach dip and queso with chips while we watch Paul McCartney give a flawless performance with no 'wardrobe malfunctions.'
Glenda shows us her bull's eye quilt before we leave. It is really coming together with vibrant colors and patterns. We head for home just before 10:00. It is warm and so humid the streets are wet. It was an enjoyable day spent with a very special friend. I'll have to hang onto this memory as we head out on the road whe4re life is a series of short moments with 'potential new friends.' There is good in that but it is just not the same as tried and true friends.
It is 12:30 a.m. and 59.8 degrees.
