01-31-2005 Boats, Golf Clubs and Johnny Carina's

Monday, January 31, it was dark, cold and gloomy again this morning. I fired up the water heater early so we could get a move on and get in to Austin for some errands. We hit the road around 9:30. Our first stop at Texas Parks and Wildlife in South Austin did not get the day off to a good start. Our attempt to register the DeLorean that we acquired in Wisconsin was met with disdain by the Texas State employee that we encountered. Based on past experience this was not a surprising development. So we folded up our paperwork and made a hasty exit. Plan B will have to be pursued on the Internet with a little more research.

Our next stop on this gray and misty morning was to drop off some items for storage. We managed to accomplish this with no major obstacles--nothing that a good length of rope couldn't solve. We headed north to central Austin and stopped at Instant Replay. No new clubs had arrived there to we drove on to the Goodwill center at Burnet & 183 (or as we used to call it in the 1980's "The corner of everything, and everything else!.) We dropped off our donations and felt many pounds lighter! Moving on northward we stopped at Golfsmith and hit the jackpot. Both of us found a club we liked. We left quickly before we found something else we couldn't live without. Finally we stopped at the Johnny Carina's Country Italian Restaurant at Parmer and I-35. I had the Lemon Crème Salmon over Angel Hair Pasta. Bob chose the Spicy Garlic Tilapia over spinach and pasta. Both were excellent.

We stopped in Elgin for a paper on the way home and were glad to arrive and be out of the rainy weather. The Beauty was a chilly 54 degrees however. So we cranked up both heaters and read the paper on the couch in front of the glowing heater in the living room. After we finished the puzzles we watched another movie rental; Super Size Me! If you haven't seen this documentary I highly recommend it. You'll never look at fast food the same again. And it really brought home the lesson that 'we are what we eat.' Morgan Spurlock, the filmmaker and star of the movie, eats nothing but McDonald's for 30 days. The results are shocking, even to his doctors! He is 34 years old and his film has been nominated for an Oscar in the documentary category. He made the film for $65,000 and it has grossed an impressive $11.5 million at the box office. A year after making the film Morgan is back to his pre-"Super Size Me" weight of 185 pounds--thanks to his fiancee Alexandra Jamieson who is a vegen chef.

Of course, immediately after the movie we had to eat something:-) You cannot watch somebody pounding down burgers and fries for 30 days and not be hungry after that; even is he is killing himself. Although I must warn the feint of heart that some parts of the movie are fairly gross. If you started a diet in January like a lot of us it could be very inspirational!

We watched a little TV and now I'm journaling. Steve and Elaine called. They have a new puppy; Lizzie, a six month old Australian Shepherd that they rescued. I'm so jealous of a new puppy. We're trying to work out a time to meet them for dinner. Our schedule here at the end of our stay in the Austin area is really getting crowded. Hopefully we can work something out.

It's 10:19 p.m. and 44.1 degrees.
