01-12-2005 Dental, Optical, Photography and West Wing

Wednesday, January 12, I was up at 7:00 a.m. and it is barely light out. It is warm this morning; 62 degrees. The awnings were flapping all night in a strong wind. We eat a quick breakfast. The dentist's office called at 8:27 (of course it didn't ring due to whatever issues our cell phone is having) asking us to come early for our appointment. Fat chance! We'll barely6 get there at our appointed time as it is. We leave ten minutes early to stop and get gas for $1.67 on the way.

Bob goes first for the 9:45 appointment and I take the next one. Our dentist is full of golf stories as usual. He played at Shadow Glen, where we played with Steve recently. He was there just after the flooding in the fall and golf balls had floated up and were left behind on the grounds everywhere. He left there with a 5-gallon bucket of Titleists. He said he could be selective about brands and went for the good ones without too much mud caked on them. What a character. He's had a tough year with deaths in the family but he's still his same cheery self.

We tried to go to Just For Feet for new tennies but the place was gutted and clearly out of business. Heck, we've only been gone ten months and our favorite footwear place is down the tube. Our next stop is the optical place where Bob orders new lenses. Then we finally find Samurai Sam's Teriyaki Grill at 183 and Burnet Road (the place we looked for last week.) The menu says "Chosen as the Number 1 Asian Fast Food Franchise in USA by Entrepreneur Magazine in 2002, with stores in eight states. Their grilled egg rolls are excellent. And their green Blackberry Jasmine tea was divine. It was pretty good, with healthier than usual Asian food choices, but we thought it was a bit pricey for fast food.

Moving on to the camera place we found that my guy I've been dealing with was not coming back until 2:00. So we tried the Rack Room Shoes up the road but found nothing. I had Bob stare at the can openers at Linens & Things. He was as befuddled as I was by all of the choices. So we passed on all of them. We bought a few groceries at Target (don't tell Glenda, ha ha!) and went back to the camera place.

David was there and I shocked him by actually saying I had made up my mind on a camera. There was only one problem, that model was not in stock. But I picked out all of my accessories and he will get the camera from one of their other locations. I will stop by tomorrow when I'm in town for Jean's luncheon and pick it up. What a big weight off of my shoulders to be out of the camera decision business!

We made it home by 4:00. We got lots of things off of our list today. Exhausted, we settled in with the paper, had a snack and then I worked on a few more journal pages before heading to Glenda's around 6:15 for West Wing. It is still quite warm at 72 degrees. The wind blew hard all day and rain with a cold front is expected to hit tonight.

We had Glenda try to call our cell phone but couldn't get it to ring. We'll have to consult the manual when we get home. We sorted out the TiVo Suggestion list on her new DVR. We all have too many gadgets. We yakked and half-way watched Lost until West Wing came on. Tonight was a brand new episode about Josh and the new presidential candidate, Santos (aka Jimmy Smits), duking it out on their first stop on the campaign trail. Glenda served coffee, tea and hot apple turnovers. It was way too warm for a fire but it rained hard around 7:30. We lost the TV signal for a bit.

After West Wing I logged on and got mail, paid bills, and uploaded journal pages. Patti was on the chat room (she has new GAIM, or something, software that Bernie loaded--better spam blocker or some such.) She said they had quarter-sized hail this afternoon in Central Missouri. After we signed off I heard on the Austin news that there were winds of over 100 mph in the Texas panhandle. I hope Bob's Aunt Delphine is okay out there.

We packed up around 10:15 and headed home to beat another line of thunderstorms. We barely made it in time.

It's 12:10 a.m. and 59.9 degrees.
