By 11:00 a.m. or so we headed north on Hwy 69 to CR145 and the two golf courses of Bullard; Peach Tree and Oak Hurst. We played the championship course, Oak Hurst. We hit a small bucket of balls first and then teed off at 11:45 just ahead of a large group of guys starting at noon. It is a nice course but totally soggy from recent drenching rains. The course is very walkable which we like. The Bermuda was completely brown here. The tarps used to cover the greens during a recent freeze were still rolled up along the sides of the fairways.
A maintenance group with loud machines disrupted our first four holes. Then a crazy old fart Texan who was a course marshall got my goat. He was clueless about golf course etiquette. And it seems I was clueless about how to ignore him:-)
The sun never came out but it was warm enough walking. The high was around 55 I'm guessing. There were still lots of reds and yellows and oranges in the trees yet. I wish the sun would have peeked through so we could have seen the bright colors. The course played long with no roll on the soggy fairways. And the greens were almost barren (the overseeding is not in yet) so putting was iffy. We'd like to play it again in drier weather.
We played quickly and by 3:15 were tooling back to Jacksonville. We briefly cruised through Bullard but didn't spot a place to eat there. The BBQ place in Jacksonville was closed so we went on south on 69 and found Chubby's Grill and Bar ( a cross between Chili's and Lone Star Cafe.) Bob had the Seafood Combo (catfish, coconut shrimp and BBQ shrimp) and I had Cedar Plank Salmon. Our grilled mixed veges were great. I used Bob's raspberry sauce on my salmon since we never did figure out what he was supposed to use it for.
We were home by 5:00 and welcomed hot showers. We read the Dallas Morning News that we had to do a bat turn for on the way back from town (we had our choice of the DMN or the Tyler Morning Telegraph!) This is a big TV night for us so fortunately we have all of the major networks coming in clearly. Life is good.
It's 7:00 p.m. and 56.7 degrees.
