12-02-2004 Golf at Calvert Crossing Golf Course on the LA Audubon Golf Trail

Thursday, December 2, the low last night was 36.7 degrees; not as cold as they predicted. Our third night in a row that we're all alone here in our beautiful park. It is sunny and calm this morning. The lake is like a huge mirror. Our new heater in the living room is a winner. But it is so chilly out; our new thermostat feature is not really cycling on and off.

By 11:08 we are headed east on I-20 to exit 103. We follow the signs to Calvert Crossing in Calhoun, LA. This course is on the Louisiana Audubon Golf Course Trail. The last sign we saw said 'two miles' but unbeknownst to us the sign at the last turn was down. We roamed around for a bit and finally found a gas station for directions. That's when we saw the sign at the last turn had been plowed over by a speeding, out-of-control motorist. Anyway we finally found the course. There are huge, expensive homes surrounding the course out in the middle of nowhere.

We didn't see a driving range and the pro said he could get us on right before a group at 12:30. So at 12:15 we teed off after paying our $92.00 for two green fees and a cart (a bit on the pricey side for us but the course is nice.) Mainly, we'd rather walk but it looked like the course was spread out among the big homes. It turned out to be a good decision to take a cart. It was one-quarter to one-half miles from green to tee box on most holes. The bad part was the 90 degree cart rule. We didn't finish until 4:20, which is a long round for us. We usually walk faster than that!

The course was very wet; we were glad we didn't try to play yesterday. It is a beautiful course with interesting, well laid out holes. Bob had a whopping slope rating of 140 at 6,500 yards. My tees were short at just over 5,000 yards and a milder slope of 118. But the wet conditions and my non-existent short game ballooned my score anyway.

We were famished as we headed back towards Ruston. The Log Cabin Mesquite Grill on Hwy 133 was open at last (they opened at 4:30 so we just made it.) And we were glad we found this place open during our stay here. We shared a double order of chicken and shrimp fajitas. The grilled shrimp were outstanding. Their salsa was freshly made. The fresh cilantro had a heavenly aroma. We might have to come back and try the quail on the menu (we got a kick out of the fact that you could add a side of quail to any entree for $5.99!)

We bought the Dallas Morning News on the way home. We crashed and read the paper, took showers after the water heated up, and watched CSI.

It's 10:15 p.m. and 44.5 degrees. The high was only around 55 degrees today but it was plenty warm for golf.
