11-25-2004 Happy Thanksgiving, Our First On The Road!

Thursday, November 25, I awake to a miracle; the sun is shining, the wind is not blowing and a soft fog is covering the lake! It is 41.2 degrees at 7:15 a.m. I fix a cup of coffee on this brilliant Turkey Day (our first out on the road), put on a big coat and head out for a walk.

Not too many people are stirring. Of course the hunters are up and he has a fire the size of Montana on his BBQ grill. I tell him it looks inviting on such a chilly morning. I cruise the entire campsite circle and stop at the top of the hill to check out the meeting building. It is a very nice facility with a kitchen that would be great for family reunions. The restrooms and showers across the road are first rate as well. I didn't find a laundry so my memory of one in the Woodall's Directory must be faulty.

Back home I curl up on the couch and read for a bit. Bob and I eat a light breakfast of bagels in anticipation of a Turkey Day feast later. About 11:30 I go outside to call my sister, Carla, and wish her a happy holiday. The cell reception is better out there but I still lose her after ten minutes or so. I warned her it might happen and she was on her way out the door to Michael's brother's for Thanksgiving anyway. I'm glad I caught her for a bit. She said they had snow there yesterday.

I walked around front of The Beauty to see if the signal would return and saw Jeff and Rebecca across the road. We chatted for a few minutes. They were off to the beach across the lake so she could use the concrete pavement under the pavilion over there for her yoga She's an instructor; has her own business in Clinton, MS Center For Yoga and Health, Rebecca Laney. I've always wanted to give yoga a try. Maybe in my retirement I'll have the time. I invited them to join us for Thanksgiving dinner around 3:00. They said they would bring the wine!

Bob and I drove to the Shell Station for the Dallas Morning News and were back before 1:00. I started cooking and did a fairly good job of juggling large pots and dishes on my limited counter space. I must have used about 95% of my dishes, utensils, pots and pans. I'm sure it is the biggest cooking undertaking so far but I enjoyed the challenge. Around 2:15 Bob and I rearranged the picnic table on the veranda behind The Beauty. And we rolled the DeLorean out of the walkway. I discovered I have no tablecloth clips so I put my distilled water jugs out to hold down the tablecloth. Very classy!

Jeff and Rebecca arrived promptly at 3:00 with wine and spaghetti (their planned fare for the day--and tasty it was too, made with venison.) We uncorked the wine; an excellent California Pinot Noir was my choice, and toasted to new friendships. I did my last minute mashed potato and gravy thing. We hauled it all outside. Wow, the trailer was hot after one and a half hours of the oven for my turkey tenderloin.

The sun was warm, the lake was like glass and our dinner was fabulous (if I do say so myself.) Dr. Atkins would have objected to all of those carbs, but hey, it's the holidays! Tequila (a.k.a. Quervo) their cute little Chihuahua, was on my lap after he snuck out of their RV on a wine run. So all was right with the world. It got chilly at sundown so we moved inside for coffee and dessert. We got into a tea discussion and I shared some of Marilynn's precious chrysanthemum and rose bud tea with Rebecca. I hope she savors it like I do. It was a fine end to our first Thanksgiving 'on the road.' They invited for a campfire vigil at their place next time.

It's 12:02 a.m. and 45.4 degrees.
