In response to the assignment for our Introduction to Design final project to construct a mosaic of not less than four square feet from raw clay to final mortared and grouted mounted piece, I decided on a Homage to Teachers theme to incorporate the many mosaic inspiring subjects I have come into contact with over the course of the semester. My final mosaic [was] mounted on a piece of board measuring 21-1/2” x 32”. I decorated the mosaic using three types of ceramic coloring techniques and applied red iron oxide to the bisque-fired outer frame tiles. I mixed several colors of mason stains to white slip (made of B-Mix) to apply as under glazes on the raw tile in areas I wished to have a more matte finish. For the areas I where wanted a high gloss finish, I painted on CCCC glazes to the bisque-fired tiles. As experiments in firing under-glazes to Cone 6 and in hand painting glazes, I found neither application successful in the final product. I did find, however, adequate slopping of red iron oxide to the bisque fired frame tiles produced a wood-like (cherry) finish that I did find pleasing.
Size: 21-1/2" x 32" Material: Stoneware Ceramic
