Mantle

$480

“Mantle” is a representation of humanity’s ability to accept and wear the burdens of our mantles with full absence of emotion. In this piece I am exploring how we go on with our lives balancing the strain of our burdens within our daily existence. One witnesses the strain in the shoulder muscles balanced against the placid expressionless face. Some have seen in this piece, strong and mournful cries of the soul. Still others have seen simply tiredness. Whatever the individual interpretation, the image is one of archetypal struggle and endurance, yet with a subtle reflection of tenderness.

I was extremely pleased with the final finish on this guy. I was most interested in retaining the strain in the neck muscles -- it is that strain counterbalanced with the unemotional face that makes this piece so strong in my opinion.  I had never made a bust before, but I guess after shaving Dad's head for 20 years, something stuck!  :)
