Just putting the word “female” with “Ganesh” is provocative. I do not profess to know a whole lot about it, nor have I acknowledged the accepted meanings in this figure. I created this powerful goddess figure to recognize the simultaneous polar attitudes of repression/submission and verve/strength of the female in all countries, but more specifically the areas where Hinduism predominates since they would be the first to recognize and accept an elephant-faced human figure. The elephant-faced female figure is standing at the shoreline facing out to the world with the sea surging at her feet. Stable, known land behind her and roiling, unknown ocean beyond the breakers. Her arms are folded behind her as in helplessness -or dispassion -or bondage -but her strength and resolve are unwavering against the sea. I used a cone 5 sculpting clay for these figures and fired them to cone 6 - the finished pieces have a shimmery brick finish I'll use again.
