CURRENT EVENTS AT THE STUDIO JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2006 [ Quick PR Links ] I won, thrice! Yeah “Sea Fern”! ::: … I’m working this semester as a part-time 3D Design and Exhibit Design Instructor at Central Carolina Community College’s Professional Arts & Crafts in Clay & Metal Sculpture program in Siler City — gathering some terrific artists ~ Mike Roig ~ Bob Rankin ~ Edwin White ~ and a lighting design guru ~ Stan Pomeranz ~ for field trips and developing a great PR/Show relationship with Stan of Crocker’s Mark Gallery (scene of this semester’s senior show). … also finished the Garden Spirits commission and the Palm Bells commission (except for the glass wind catchers I’m due to create with the help of Cliff Swanson. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2005 ::: We serendipitously had car trouble outside Gallery 9 in Banner Elk (Foscoe, really) weekend before this past one (we were up leaf peeping), and spent a good hour talking with Mary-Ann Prack (abstract expressionist sculptor in ceramics and metals). She's also shown at Tyndall Galleries, and is a member of the Tri-State Sculptors. What I found most interesting was that most of her sculptures have two sides or their 'heads' are turn-able or removable, changing the personality and tension between pieces! Real neat! She purchases her supplies solely from Miami Clay (an alternative to Highwater?) which has some interesting clay bodies… And, so, my sister from Ft. Lauderdale (no power until Nov. 22nd!) is sending me a catalog since she can get the stuff w/out shipping costs and then send them up to me via their business-to-business ups rates. Also, I'm back to 'work' starting tomorrow but today I'll finish trimming up some pots I threw at Marina's on Friday (my sub-let Mud ‘n Rust Studio in Raleigh). She's letting me buy her old phoenix for $10/bag and use her glaze materials since she's all into the store-bought kind now, except for her bronze. For these new pots, I was also working on a glaze reformulation this weekend (long-hand! old home week, eh?) and stopped when I saw the price of cobalt oxide... ah, well. I'm also starting #5 of the 6 commissioned garden spirits - These are developing much slower than I'd like specifically due to the energy my folks' situation drains from me and also because they are all starting to look like they're sitting on toilets! (Bruce says to go ahead and make one on a toilet - to exorcize the potty demon!) Here are really bad photos of the first two in progress: Celtic and Minirva (The folks, btw, are being gearing up for a move to an assisted living facility, probably by the end of this year. We looked at two potential apartments for them this past Saturday). Marina's website has a link to the 2005 Parade of Homes work she did this summer, interesting for any of you 'tile-minded' students -- check out her latest brochure (Marina hired me to design it, PDF, 587Kb) I was also hired to do a press release and produce her photo portfolio. I see the CCCC Sculpture Program Advisory Board meeting is at the Metals shop -- have they upgraded the restroom facilities yet? :) I plan to head out on the 17th for the meeting early enough to throw some big pots for the wood-fired kiln, maybe? I picked up a bag of Loafer's Glory at Jerry's Artarama for ^6-10 firing - how's the kiln re-building going? Anyone have insights on how speckled brownstone does in a wood fire? I can't find info where it'd survive over ^6, but I have some of that clay to use as well. Think I could trade a bag for a bag of P-5? Off to the studio! ::: JULY I received a commission for six more of my "Garden Spirits" - yeah! I spent the month of July working as an apprentice to Siglinda Scarpa. Here are some shots of the studio grounds ...while I worked, a gaggle of geese, two of the 18 cats, 4 dogs and a white pig come to visit me every day!
