SF6 Tracer Studies
In the early
1980's, and while under the employ of AeroVironment, I developed a continuous
tracer analyzer for the part-per-trillion measurement of SF6
tracer. The instrument was used extensively in both laboratory and field
environments. Field uses included helicopter and fixed wing aircraft sampling
platforms. The primary advantage of the system was the insensitivity of
the operation to pressure or temperature changes. This allowed the use of
the instrument in fine scale plume mapping and dispersion studies. These
studies have ranged from emission factor development to plume dispersion
measurements (both aloft and at the ground) and indoor air quality evaluation
using tracers to simulate and track movement of toxic compounds throughout
buildings. I have presented several papers describing the instrument. Their
