Roy M. Pitkin, M.D., is Professor Emeritus in the University of California (UCLA) School of Medicine as well as editor of the medical journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.  Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCLA and before that at The University of Iowa.  His long involvement with nutrition began 25 years ago with an Academic Career Development Award in Nutrition from the National Institutes of Health and continued with his receipt of the Joseph Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition from the American Medical Association in 1982.  He has chaired several committees of the Food and Nutrition Board, including the Committee on Nutrition in Pregnancy and Lactation (1988-1992) and the Dietary Reference Intake Panel on Folate and Other B Vitamins (1996-1998).  Elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1990, he also has received honorary fellowships in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (United Kingdom) and the Deutsche Gesellshaft fur Gynakologie und Geburtshilfe (Germany).
