Large Hills
| |
One of the most common types of terrain is hills. They block line of site to anything behind them, and give elevation to
any type of missile armed troops so they can see (and thus shoot at) more units on the table. They can also control movement
if the sides of the hill are classified as difficult.
Small Hills
| |
Different sizes to add variety. And even different elevations.
Modular Hills
| |
This pair are modular, they have two flat sides each so they can be combined to make one larger hill. Or the flat sides can
be impassable cliffs.
Pine Forest
| |
The next common feature (in a wilderness setting) is woods. The trees can be removed from the base of these, to make it easier
when you do have to move troops through them.
Decidous Forest
| |
I'm not real happy with the trees though, they don't wear well, and the foliage is constantly falling off.
Scrub
| |
Overgrown areas that aren't as dense as woods - they hinder movement but do not block line of site. Since most of my armies
are based in the 'badlands' type of area, we tend to need these a lot.

Pond
| |
Of course, water can always be a factor. This was originally going to be an undead swamp, but has since become a small pond.
Old Rivers
| |
Some of the first terrain I made were rivers sections. These haven't held up well - I used a meltable water for model railroading
- and it has cracked and yellowed with use.
Armorcast Rivers
| |
Armorcast used to make a really nice river. I bought a full set, but several sections have disappeared, and they no longer
make them.
Bridge of Skulls
| |
Of course, to cross the river you need a bridge. I picked up the Armorcast Bridge of Skulls several years ago, when I was
still playing undead.
Three Bridges 1
| |
In September 2005 my local game store held a Confrontation tournament, and I volunteered to make some of the terrain for it.
They were going to use the "Three Bridges" scenario - which requires 4" of straight rivers, with two fords across them, and
three bridges crossing them.
Three Bridges 2
| |
So over a couple of weeks, I made enough for 12 tables. That is 48 FEET of river, and 36 bridges. I plan to eventually make
some curve sections so these are more flexible.
Three Bridges 3
| |
People really seemed to like them for the tournament, and have asked to use them again in January 2005.
Walls
| |
Once you get into more civilized areas, you star encounering man-made terrain. These rock walls were also made by Armorcast.
Hedges
| |
You also find hedges. These are made from dish scrubbers.
Stone Circle
| |
Several years ago, GW ran a summer campaign, and a major feature was magic stone circles (think Stonehenge). So I made some.
Big Boulder
| |
This was originally made by my wife, to help out. It is basically paper mache'.
Rocks & Boulders
| |
These were made by my daughter a few years ago.
Gaming Table
| |
When I bought my house, I built a game table, then over Christmas 2004 I rebuilt it (better, stronger, faster).
Game Table
| |
The table is 6' x 4' - big enoug for most war games.
Storage Shelf
| |
In addition, it has a storage shelf underneath in the back - where I can put all the terrain when I'm not using it.
Work Space
| |
Well, this table is just too convient to not use for modelling and painting - but I don't want to damage it. So I made some
portable work surfaces out of the previous one to lay on the table for that purpose.
Work Space
| |
I stappled foam bumpers on the bottom, so they don't scratch the terrain.
Work Space
| |
Work surface in action. Making the last two tables worth of river sections and bridges, as well as wood tokens (for the Confrontation
"Timber" scenario).
