Amnesty International: Insurgents are guilty

The Amnesty International report — "In Cold Blood: Abuses by Armed Groups" — said (terrorist) insurgents were guilty of direct attacks intended to cause the greatest possible loss of civilian life, indiscriminate attacks resulting in the deaths of civilians, targeting humanitarian organizations, abductions and killing captured and defenseless police and military personnel.

"There is no honor nor heroism in blowing up people going to pray or murdering a terrified hostage.  Those carrying out such acts are criminals, nothing less, whose actions undermine any claim they may have to be pursuing a legitimate cause," Amnesty said.

Condoleeza Rice, Ph.D

Secretary of State

U.S. Department of State

Washington, DC

Dear Madame Secretary:

We are writing to express our extreme disappointment that approximately 100 Montagnards were forcibly returned from Cambodia to Vietnam on July 20, 2005, and our grave concern for those Montagnards who remain in Cambodia and who reside in Vietnam.  This letter also contains specific recommendations for moving forward with Montagnard protection in ways that are appropriate in light of their urgent and highly credible claims to protection as refugees.

This letter follows a letter of July 18, 2005, in which many of those listed below strongly urged that Montagnards in Cambodia and Vietnam receive more appropriate protection from the governments of Cambodia, Vietnam, and the United States, as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Our specific recommendations for protecting Montagnards
in Cambodia and Vietnam are that the UNHCR and the governments listed above work
together to achieve the following goals:
      1.
                           Ensure
that the Montagnards who have been forcibly returned to Vietnam have access to appropriate U.S. Government
officials who can interview them for resettlement as refugees to the United States.
In addition, in-country processing for Montagnards should be expanded to include family reunification, especially for
those who would not qualify under I-730 processing.  We recommend processing under
Priority 3 (P-3) at minimum; categories of eligibility should also be explored.
 2.
                           Ensure
that Montagnards from Vietnam who remain in Cambodia all have access to interviews for resettlement in the United States,
whether they have been “screened out” by UNHCR or not.  U.S. law does not require referral by UNHCR
for resettlement interviews, and there are specific provisions for the adjudication of Montagnard applicants within U.S. law. Those found not eligible for resettlement
and those who do not wish to resettle in a third country should not be forcibly returned to Vietnam.
Repatriation should take place on a strictly voluntary basis and only when trustworthy systems of international monitoring
are in place in the Central Highlands.
      3.
                           Put
in place an effective system of international monitoring to ensure that the religious and other rights of Montagnards are
respected in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.  This should be complemented with development assistance
for Montagnards and others in the Central Highlands.
We look forward to hearing from you on this urgent
                           matter.

 Sincerely,

Subject:          A MUST READ

I received the attached article from a friend (who received it from a friend, etc.).   Don't know who the author is, and it is a shame, because he/she should get credit for a great thought provoking piece of work.   Regardless of your political beliefs, or how you feel about whether or not we (the U.S.) should ever have gotten in to this war with Iraq, or how you feel about the President of the United States.   The bottom line is that we are committed to this war - like it or not - and we need to support the President, our troops and every effort required to defeat terrorism.   The piece is a bit lengthy, but well worth the time to read it.

U.S. lawmakers tour Guantanamo prison

First visit since criticism intensified

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) -- American lawmakers on Saturday toured the U.S. prison for suspected terrorists for the first time since recent harsh condemnation of Guantanamo detainees' treatment have renewed demands that the camp close.

"Guantanamo has become a lightning rod," said Rep. Ellen Tauscher, a Democrat from California.

She was one of 16 members of the House Armed Services Committee who were on a one-day fact-finding trip. A Senate delegation also was to visit the prison Saturday.

Lawmakers from both parties fear that the prison at the U.S. Navy base has become an image problem because of claims that U.S. interrogators abuse and torture inmates.

The chairman of the House committee, Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter, said such criticism amounted to "wild accusations."

Hunter blamed "propagandists" for spreading "rumor and innuendo" to hurt the U.S. He said the congressional visit was meant to show "the facts" about operations at the prison.

I found this great PTSD article on a military base.   It was in a FAMILY MAGAZINE for American troops.
PTSD does not only hit our military men and women.    It impacts a great number of Americans, who never left home...
Child abuse, elderly abuse, marital abuse, street crime victims (rape), etc. are some of the biggest sufferers.
Understanding PTSD is a great way from keeping it from passing down through generations.

(Who Are Today's Terrorist Connections?)

Two recently discovered documents captured from the Vietnamese communists during the Vietnam War strongly support the contention that a close link existed between the Hanoi regime and the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) while John Kerry served as the group's leading national spokesman.

Researchers Troy Jenkins and Tom Wyld located the two Vietnamese communist documents referenced above in the archives of the Vietnam Center at Texas Tech University, in the Douglas Pike Collection. Douglas Pike was a leading authority on the Vietnam War who collected over 2 million pages of original documents now archived at the Vietnam Center. James Reckner, Ph.D., Director of the Vietnam Center at Texas Tech, verifies that the documents in the Pike collection are original and authentic. The Circular and the Directive are listed as items numbered 2150901039b and
2150901041 respectively.
