The poverty rate is the proportion of the population whose income falls below the government's official poverty level, and is adjusted each year for inlflation. The national poverly rate was 12.6% in 2005, down slightly from the 2004 rate of 12.7%, but above the 2000 rate of 11.3%. About 37.0 million people in the U.S. were in poverty in 2005, nearly 6 million more than in 2000. In 2005 17.1 % of children and 9.8% of people aged 65 and older were defined as poor.
