GRABBED A FEW WORDS WITH GLEN DANZIG AND HIS BAND MATES; EIRE, STEVE
AND DAMIEN, FOR YOU.glenn baby!
[kiki] Samhain's latest release is a twelve inch...?
[glenn] Yes, it's called "Unholy Past" and it's about fucking! It's the first song I wrote specifically about fucking, like about sex. If it's good, not if it's crummy!
[kiki] Glenn, you write all the songs, do you write lyrics before the music or...
[erie] No, he brings the songs down and he's usually got them arranged and we just rake them over!
[glenn] Well, ok basically, what I do is bring the songs down and we do em. The "Hungry End" is about death.
[kiki] How long after the Misfits, did you wait before putting Samhain together?
[glenn] The last formal show I did with the Misfits was the Santa Monica Civic show with Black Flag in '83
. I quit that night, told 'em I'm not in the band. So, I did one more show with the Misfits, which was the final Misfits' show in Detroit, 'cause we've always had a big crowd there, a lot of people, and we just felt we owed it to 'em. We did one final Misfits' show on Halloween in Detroit, and also that's the night when Samhain actually started. The night the Misfits actually were declared dead, to be reborn here.
[erie] We had the same idea!
[kiki] Let's talk about the present line-up...
[glenn] The present line-up. Well, ok basically it was me, Erie, Steve and Lyle, from Minor Threat, but Lyle wasn't really up to what we wanted to do. He's a great guitar player, but what we wanted to do just wasn't happening. So, we got Damien instead, about three months after.
[kiki] When was your first Lp "Initium" released?
[glenn] Last September. "Initium", that's Latin for 'new begining'.
[kiki] Is Samhain going to stay together, at least longer than the Misfits?
[glenn] Yeah, probably. You won't get another tour out of us until this winter.
[kiki] Well, say it again Glenn, did you really kill Marilyn?
[glenn] No, I didn't. You know who did! You guys are the culprits out here! I didn't have anything to do with it, but I don't think Southern California is any worse than anywhere else. I have no idea.
SO, WE LEFT GLENN TO FINISH HIS BUSINESS AND WANDERED OVER TO CHAT WITH STEVE, SAMHAIN'S DRUMMER.
[kiki] Steve, howz it goin', first time in L.A.?
[steve] Great! No, second. I'm from Jersey. We, the Misfits, all lived in the same town. Erie and I to school with Doyle, the Guitarist from the Misfits. We all knew 'em, so when the Misfits were breaking up, Erie and Glenn got together, and I came in and here we are!
[kiki] What is your interpretation of the meaning behind Samhain?
[steve] Samhain is the original Halloween, the Pegan Halloween, season of the dead.
[kiki] But doesn't 'Sawmen' mean devil?
[steve] Actually, it's pronounced 'Saum' It has to do with lucifer and things like that.
[kiki] But you guys aren't devil worshippers, are you?
[steve] No, we are not, no where's near it, We don't believe in that kind of organized religion!
[kiki] So, you don't have to be a devil worshipper to be into the devil, right?
[steve] Yeah, and we don't wear pentagrams either like some heavy metal bands do. It's nota gimmick, it's just a thiong that we believe in, a dark sided thing which we all enter. If, say a band like the Dead Kennedys
[kiki] Do many 'Jesus Freak' types picket your shows?
[steve] Yes! Religious groups that want to ban our shows!
[kiki] Before you go, Steve, what message do wish to relay?
[steve] Be yourself, don't follow other people, and don't follow other things!
SO, WE FOLLOWED STEVE AND RAN INTO DAMIEN, THE GUITAR PLAYER, ALSO HERE FROM NEW JERSEY.
[kiki] Damien, you knew Steve...
[damien] Yeah, we were friends before I was in Samhain. I was in his other band Warning Noise, too. They needed a guitar player so Steve kept hounding me about it. Steve said, "Well I've got this friend, let's try him out!".
[kiki] Glenn takes care of the songs, do you ever throw in anything original?
[damien] Yeah, sometimes on stage. Sometimes I throw things in, but usually I don't, because Glenn wants it played a certain way, so that's it.
[kiki] Damien, do you think Samhain will stay together?
[damien] I hope so. I think we can really make it. Play louder, faster, harder,weatier, etc., but the main thing is to believe in your thing and respect Glenn's thing, as soon as he brings it down again for us.
