This is the time of year when life returns. The Earth renews herself, and the last grasp of the cold Winter is released. The trees turn bright green. The bushes flower. The birds sing. This is a good time for us to begin paying attention to the voice of Mother Earth. This is the season of Wisdom.

We watch the seasons change, and despite the differences in where and when it rains or snows -- and how much -- the Earth always renews herself in Spring. Life always comes back. The sun always rises. The sun always sets. The moon always changes phases in the same order. And whether a volcano erupts, a tornado destructs, or an earthquake destroys -- life always returns anew.

The Earth is patient. The Earth sustains herself. She remains in balance. She takes the time to rest. She transforms: never creating from scratch / never destroying entirely.

Every animal, every plant, all have a role to play on the Earth. Some are builders: as are the insects. Some are recyclers: as are the bacteria. Some are predators: eating other animals. Some are vegetarians: eating the plants. All are born, all mature, all die.

Balance is maintained in life. And where balance shifts, there are natural forces which bring things again to center. When the warm and cool air are in conflict, thunderstorms appear. When there are too many animals, there is famine, or drought, or plague. Every time life goes out of balance the Earth corrects herself.

We can learn much from her wisdom.

Often in religion, we use deities to signify this time of year. It is no coincidence that many mystery religions celebrate in the spring: bringing together the flowering of the plants and the flowering of the spirit. It is no coincidence that the Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ in the spring, or that Easter is full of bunnies and chickens.

Renewal and wisdom go hand in hand. This is the season we come out of the darkness of soul; when we discover the beauty of life, and the joy of living. Let us open our hearts, our minds, and our spirits to the wisdom of the world.
