[This group meditation was written to illustrate a link between the Signposts of our faith and the Chakras of Yoga. Interestingly enough, it also illustrates some energies of the Signposts which are not captured by the simple names we chose for them.]

With your eyes closed, all around you is blackness. Now begin to notice a dim light. As you look around you, you notice you are standing in a path under a thick canopy of trees. You are in a very thick jungle.

The light continues to get brighter and you realize it is midday here in this jungle. You feel drawn toward something ahead of you and you follow the path toward it.

In the distance you see a large clearing and what appears to be an ancient temple at its center. As you approach this temple you notice how the vines have grown over its walls for a good many years. Yet, the doors to this old temple have been kept clear from use.

Enter the temple . . .

It’s dark in here, lit only by a large flame on an altar at the center. As you move toward the altar you notice that there are other items on a lower shelf of the altar. You see a bow & arrow set, a graduation cap, a mirror, a precious stone, a sacred medal - like a badge or a war medal, a chalice full of fine liquid, and a set of silver scales.

The rest of the temple is remarkably empty. The items on the altar have been maintained and polished religiously. Each item shines with an unnatural glow and calls forth to you.

Reach out and take the Bow and Arrow . . .

As you pull the string of the bow and aim the arrow, you feel a strange warmth flow from it, into your arm, and down your spine. As the warmth comes to rest at your spine, you begin to feel a sense of dedication -- a sense of conviction. You feel determined and restless.

You have a vision of yourself as a hunter -- always seeking, searching, on a quest, never resting.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Reach out and take the Graduation Cap . . .

As you put it on your head, you feel a strange warmth flow from it, into your head, and down your spine. As the warmth comes to rest at your genitals, you begin to feel a sense of growth -- a sense of maturity. You feel wise and meditative.

You have a vision of yourself learning from both books and experiences, you see yourself at a graduation ceremony, you see yourself as an old person -- teaching young children.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Reach out and take the Mirror . . .

As you look into it, you feel a strange warmth flow from it, into your eyes, and down your spine. As the warmth comes to rest at your navel, you begin to feel a sense of sacredness -- a sense of honesty. You feel spiritual and in connection with life.

You have a vision of a silver cord coming our of your navel and connecting with all life around you. You share the strength and beauty of nature.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Reach out and take the Precious Stone . . .

As you hold it tightly in your hand, you feel a strange warmth flow from it, into your hand, down your arm, and to your chest. As the warmth comes to rest at your heart, you begin to feel a sense of protection -- a sense of parenthood. You feel like a guardian.

You have a vision of yourself as a warrior. You charge forth in your armor to defend life. You fight the battle against those who destroy for no reason.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Reach out and take the Medal . . .

As you pin it on yourself, you feel a strange warmth flow from it, into your body, and up your spine. As the warmth comes to rest at your throat, you begin to feel a sense of respect -- a sense of empathy. You feel as others feel. You feel their joys and their pain.

You have a vision of yourself at a ceremony receiving the Medal from someone else. The audience applauds you. Now you are handed a basket full of Medals like yours. You begin to pin them on other people. As you pin each Medal on someone, the audience applauds as loudly as they did for you.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Reach out and take the Chalice . . .

Drink its fine liquid feel a strange warmth flow from it, into your throat, and up your spine. As the warmth comes to rest at the base of your head, you begin to feel a sense of happiness -- a sense of joy. You feel like singing with the music of the universe.

You have a vision of yourself at a celebration -- like a party. You share the Chalice with the others at the celebration -- and it never runs out of fluid. It refills itself like magic. Continue to share it with others.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Reach out and take the Silver Scales . . .

As you hold them, the trays begin to reach a balance, and you feel a strange warmth flow from them, into your arm, and up your spine. The warmth finally comes to rest just above your head, and you begin to feel a sense of balance -- a sense of harmony. You feel in control.

You feel a wave of peace sweep over you like waves in the ocean -- gently warming, calming, a sense of peace -- peace of mind You feel yourself floating in the peacefulness.

Become comfortable with this view of yourself.

Again you are standing in the temple. You realize that this temple is within you and that you can return here at any time. If you wish, you may leave an offering at the altar.

You now leave the altar and head again toward the path. You walk down the path and come back to the dark area where you began.

The light fades and you are again in darkness . . .
