Relaxation and Trance Techniques

When beginning a Meditation, whether alone or in a group, the most important thing is to settle your mind into a meditative state. [The problem is compounded by the noisy world we live in, and the short attention spans we are encouraged to have!] There are many techniques which can overcome the "meditation problem" and allow our minds and bodies to relax and open for the self-discoveries we await.

Below are some of the techniques we have used in Path of the Personal Divine during our guided meditations. Some work well with some people, others work well with other people. Myself, I have found it helpful to rock gently with eyes closed (as some Eastern religionists, Orthodox Jews, and others have done).

Basic Relaxation:

TO GO:

Center yourself, feel your worries slip away and a sense of peace enter your body...

TO RETURN:

Now feel yourself return to your body. Feel your fingers and toes and feel your breath returning. Now gently return to yourself and open your eyes...


Simple Breathing:

TO GO:

Close your eyes . . .

Concentrate on the sound of your breathing. Breathe in slowly. With each breath, feel peace enter your body. Now, breathe out slowly. Feel the concerns of the day leave you. In. Out.

Feel the muscles in your feet relax. Let go of the tension in your legs and thighs. Feel the muscles in your abdomen relax. And your shoulders. Feel your arms and hands become limp and peaceful. Your neck. And finally your head.

Now concentrate on the darkness. Notice how empty it is. Notice how your concerns are gone. The darkness is all that is here.

TO RETURN:

Once more, you concentrate on your breathing. With each breath you feel yourself becoming awake again. You feel your arms and legs, and the weight of your body.

As I count backward from 10 to 1 feel your consciousness returning. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... awake!


Relaxation of the Chakras (Energy Centers):

TO GO:

Close your eyes . . .

Feel the muscles in your arms and legs relax. Feel the weight of your body.

Now begin to feel a warmth beginning at the level of your feet. It slowly begins to move upward to your ankles, your legs, your knees, your thighs. As it reaches the base of your spine, it pauses and begins to glow bright red.

Again it moves upward slightly, to the level of your glands. It pauses here also and glows bright orange.

Again the warmth moves upward to your stomach. Here it pauses and glows bright yellow.

Now it moves upward to the level of your heart. Here it pauses and glows bright green.

There is now also a warmth in your fingers, your hands, your wrists, and moving up your arms. As it reaches your shoulders, the warmth from your heart also moves upward. The warmth in your chest and in your arms merge. The warmth again moves upward. It pauses at the level of your throat. Here, it glows bright blue.

Now the warmth rises until it reaches the base of your head. It pauses here and glows bright purple.

Finally, the warmth moves upward through your head and leaves your body. As it does so, it glows bright white and then fades into darkness . . .

TO RETURN:

The weight of your body returns and the warmth subsides.

You can feel your toes, your feet, your ankles, your legs. You can feel your fingers, your hands, your wrists, your arms.

Now take a deep breath and open your eyes . . .
